My folks are going to be relocating to the Cotswolds - Moreton-in-Marsh - in the next few months and am trying to persuade the old man to join a local club as a way of improving his game and socialising / meeting new friends etc......oh, and for somewhere for me to play as well when I take the family to visit on weekends :D

Anyone know the area and can recommend somewhere? Have taken a quick look and have seen that Broadway, Chipping Norton and the Wychwood are reasonably near - any others?

Played last year at Lilybrook - very nice - near Cheltenham. Also hear good reports of Naunton Down - might be closer?
Manor House is Castle Combe I think - closer to Bath and v. pricey.

I'm a memeber at Cirencester which is 20miles away and would recommend there. Nice course, not too long, in very good nick through most of the year and is open far more than the majority in the area when it's wet.

Of the others that are closer:

BROADWAY: Lovely course, always in good nick. Great clubhouse, views are amazing. I think they will have a waiting list still though.

WYCHWOOD: Geared up for societies and green fees. Hardly ever closed even though it should be. Course is okay, bit of an open field on 4 or 5 of the holes.

BURFORD: Fantastic sleepy little club. Course is always immaculate. ANother waiting list here though.

NAUNTON: Not the best, just up and down on either side of a valley.

COTSWOLD HILLS: Very nice club, a lot of serious golfers have joined here and the course reflects the good standard in the club.

LILLYBROOK: Good course apart from two silly holes which get you upto the top of a hill. However it shuts for days on end if a stray dog wees on the bottom holes. After the snow melted last year, it was shut for waterlogging for about 12 days running!!

CLEEVE HILL: Wonderful, natural golf played on top of a hill overlooking Cheltenham (and about 5 other counties). Not in top class condition because of the restrictions by National Trust etc. But still a great layout and good welcome and social in the club.

Never played Chipping Norton. Minch is great but is 40 miles away. Manor House is nearer 50 miles, and alot of members are leaving there due to state of course and the fact they are flooding it with green fees despite still wanting £1500+ in subs!!

If they do move, give me a shout if your visiting and I'll take you round our place.

I played down that way once, nice club had two courses. One was considered parkland, the other had a "linksie" feel to it. Can't remember what the place was called now. Does anybody know where I mean????

Minchinhampton. Avening (parkland), Cherrington (Linksy).

They have the local Open qualifiers on The Cherrington.

That's the place!
Two lovely golf courses, totally different in "character".
I'd love to go back for the day, they were both in really good condition and a proper test of golf without being silly lengths.
That's where I'd join.

I have played the Manor House and Cleeve Hill. Manor House is quite nice. Cleeve Hill is superb with stunning views.

Thanks for all the recommendations - obviously means that me and the old man will have to play all of them to narrow down - what a hardship :D

Darren - cheers for the offer; will take you up on that when they eventually move and I am up that way.

Played Cleeve Hill years ago and agree, stunning views, and not a bad course at all. Apart from there not played any other courses in the area to compare.
