Does anyone's course close when there is frost like the last few days?? I played today and the greens were rock solid, made for a hard game but just read an article about how footfall on frozen greens can cause pretty bad damage!

We use temp greens in frosty weather , not great but ya get a game of golf and the real greens dont get damaged ..

saying that there was a tweet today course close as its -4

Our course stays fully open and only comes of the main greens after 5 days of heavy frost in a row - its been that way for 2 years now and after members moaning that it will damage the green the headgreenkeeper has proved to them he knows what he doing and no damage is done playing on frozen greens unless it's a consistent amount of days

My course was open mixture of temps and full greens, due to reprofiling work. I was wondering how the greens would not get damaged. The ball was pinging around like a ping pong ball!!

My place closes for heavy frost, generally will be open by 11am if it's going to open. We generally don't play on winter greens except the 18th and 1st as blocked from the Sun and don't thaw as quick. Our 9 hole course will normally open even if main course is closed for the desperadoes :D

Ours was open and on the proper greens today, although it was very frosty, and golf was a bit of a lottery on frozen greens. I am supposed to be playing in a comp. tomorrow morning when there will probably be similar conditions! Golf is better played in more Southern countries at this time of year!

Played yesterday and it was proper frosty, walked onto the first green and thought I was playing in stilettos. There was an inch of ice on me boots.

You are in a Southern County Del :)

Don't play then - you have a choice , no one forces you to go out

Temp greens if there is a frost. Was on those yesterday and today but hoping for a thaw in time to get back onto the mains in time for the weekend.

Interesting piece with a consensus that seems coming off in frost is a good plan in general

how is an article written by one person a consensus?

why if it causes so much damage do many courses that dont take the greens off show no damage?

is this still fact 5 years later?

If its not dangerous we are usually open when its frosty but on winter greens.

There seems to be quite a difference of opinion regarding playing on frozen greens

We have temp greens short/side of main greens that are maintained year round and so have proper sized holes, when it's frosty play goes onto those.

Agreed. If the Course Manager says it's OK to play on frosted greens, he knows better than me. After all it's his head on the block if the greens don't recover. Apart from asking that trollies and buggies avoid fairways when frosty, we keep on playing whatever. Never had an issue in the last 12 years - we believe he knows best, worth his weight in gold.

Wouldn't know; if it's that cold I won't go near the course.
