Played the course during the clubs Walker Shortbread Open at the beginning of August, so played off the white championship tees.
The course was in great condition with large sloping greens and tree lined fairways. At over 6400 at least half the holes are 400 yards plus. If you are to make a good score your long game needs to be in good order, but the fairways are fairly generous and there was not a great deal of rough from what I could see. There are a couple of driveable downhill par 4s and the par 3’s range from 159 to 220.
You start the round with and uphill par 4 at 454, with the green slightly down hill. Most of the holes are either up or downhill and if you are not able to hit your drive 250+ some of the par 4 are quite long and you will be faced with a few long approaches. The only par 5 is only 484 but all uphill to a plateau green, which is well protected by bunkers par here is a good score and only the longest hitters will reach in two.
At the turn you have a real risk reward hole and you can either take on the dogleg over OOB and over a row of scots pine or play safe. I took the former and ended up in the quarry and racked up a 6 which rather took the gloss of the birdie at the hole before. There follow a couple of good scoring holes both short downhill par 4s then stroke index one a 464 uphill.
All in all a lovely course with a great finishing hole with the raised green right in front of the clubhouse.
If you are up in this part of the world visiting the great links courses in the area, I highly recommend Elgin and will definitely be back next year.
