Course Rating

Oh for the days when my handicap was just 6.

I played off it wherever I went and so did everyone else just play off theirs
Never heard any of this crap.
Simple.😳

Looking back whs I'm not that fussed about having a handicap that travels I just like the ability to do scorecards on an app. Just adding that would have been enough

It's not exactly difficult to look-up your CH/PH up on an app/chart or see it pre-printed on your scorecard.
There is no requirement to know everything that went into it, just as you didn't know what went into the SSS before.

It's still simple now to 95% of people in all honesty. Most people rock up, state their HI, get given their Playing handicap and then off you go. What you score is what you score. Don't overcomplicate things.

I genuinely don't think about any of this stuff, neither do the guys I play with. Let it flow over, whack the ball 😄

See now I'll go to courses.. get 3 extra shots. Hit my game and get "wow your a bandit" because I'm not playing to those extra shots

I love it when non golfers ask me what my handicap is......

I then say at the two courses I'm a member at it is 3 at one and 2 at the other (at the moment)
the look of confusement is great, I do not even try to explain the OZ HS (WHS)
would send them to sleep.

Just shrug and get on with it. If you are putting cards in, your h/c is what it is.

I feel putting cards in too often is killing me, at this rate I'm going to stop putting cards in winter because course loses all roll becomes even longer and tougher

IE I go up 2 shots in winter and then come straight back down when summer hits

Your handicap is simply your index; you're just trying to confuse people for your own amusement.

Our place is
Length is always the dominant factor, but increasing actual length doesn't always increase the effective length, especially if there are layups, and can often end up moving obstacles out of the landing zones for rating, lowering their value significantly.

Also, courses can change quite a bit over ten years and sometimes those changes are not particularly noticeable for regular players, if at all. For example, it's not uncommon for fairway width to change over time, increasing or lowering it's target value for rating; many clubs have added a semi-cut alongside the fairways which increases the effective fairway width for rating purposes; etc.

Observing a rating would give you a good insight into what goes into them and help understand where the real difficulties are for players in general, not just the difficulties you find yourself.
My place is definitely getting harder. Over the last 5yrs some fairways have been shaped and consequent new areas of rough managed to require a lot more care and accuracy of shots; strategic trees have grown significantly - with some now providing much greater risk than years ago - both off the tee and in general play. We have had two fairway cross-ditches put in that require decision making not previously required, plus we have completed the rebuild and new build of all bunkers on the course - some new ones being in very strategic and risky positions again presenting new risk. Plus our OoB is tight close down the RHS of most holes and that wasn’t fully reflected. And we have two new PA ponds.

1) My main gripe isn't that the slope is wrong it's wrongly applied to score diff

2) Hell when whs came in we didn't even use CR to take into account
1) I clearly asnwered that point in my early post to which you have not replied with a coherent counrter.
2) Yes we did, CR has always been applied to the SD

My course doesn't run qualifiers in winter but I understand the issue. Normally, my high scores are in April and May, ground is wet, ball not running, and so my H/C goes up. Then it dries out, hopefully, and I put better scores in. This year, because of the dry weather, I have had two counting scores already so this year will be different. However, the gist is, your H/C will go up and down quite frequently under this system.

The old system was glacial in how it responded so people reached a level and could put their feet up. That isn't the case now. Accept it, it's less stressful.

Was it? Or was it course rating not included in course handicap which then change?

That was always the problem with UHS, WHS has tried to address it all be it not perefectly. You seem to have plenty of gripes but no solution.

I've offered a solution, don't use slope for score diffs .

Take them away suddenly cr is the only factor towards

Then it reflects the difficulty correctly

Any need? No.

I invite anyone defending the ratings to come play and then you will see the rating is incorrect

I have also posted a video of the course that nobody has bother to watch to give a visual explanation of the course.

So instead of trying to be condescending why not take the time to actually view all the evidence I am presenting.

Rather than "computer says no"
I've watched it.

Firstly...let me say it looks a lovely course...interesting contours and appears to have made decent use of the old land.

My overriding takeaway though from the video was that a 17 handicap golfer, who hits his hybrid as far as I hit my driver and his 6 iron the same as my 5 wood, was able to spray the ball all over the place, rarely hitting a fairway, but always being able to play an easy recovery shot from light rough, and only once found the gorse (13th hole).

I suspect, if that is typical, that's why the slope is relatively low....it seemed to me that he was simply unable to put his ball into trouble.
