Course management the key?

I think over a period of time you just learn how to play your home course by learning from your most common mistakes.

Couple things I focus on.

1) Where's the trouble, play to avoid it.
2) Only hit the shot I am confident I can hit.
3) WHEN I make a mistake, get the ball back in play the safest way I can.

Other things you can think about is over time you know the holes you have problems with that can bring in a big score. Have a strategy to play those holes. Even if you play them as bogey holes. There are some holes at my place I'd quite happily walk off with a bogey.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I have high hopes for a sensible steady round at the weekend!

Sounds like you can play when you get out of your own way.

Strange you should say that, I was reading Bob Rotella's Golf is not a Game Of Perfect on the plane this morning and he quoted something very similar...

I probably picked up the phrase from him! If you enjoy that book you'll get something similar but different from the ones I suggested, it's all good stuff imo

Excellent, another reason to hit Amazon - got a great pile of Golf books I'm working through at the moment, trying to ready the motivational / instruction ones but keep getting stuck into brilliant stories - finished reading 'The Match' last night - superb! Decided I had to read a Rotella one before I can start The Grand Slam...

10th hole hit a pretty good drive but to the base of a tree at the edge of the fairway, tried to hook it at the green with a hybrid - in to more trouble, then more = pick up.
11th hole short par three went for the flag tucked behind the green side bunker, straight in plugged, out a second attempt , chip to back of green, missed putt = pick up
12th hole tight fairway with road to left train track to the right, hit driver (almost perfect) that just drew into the road, reload and hit exactly the same shot= pick up
Then went on to birdie 3 of the next 6 and par two of the others!

OK, so the 10th hole was a bit silly.

11 wasn't totally bad management. You could have hit it in the bunker regardless of where you were aiming and getting plugged was unlucky but not uncommon this time of year.

12, you hit a couple of bad shots, it happens and there isn't much you can do about it but bad execution and bad management are very different things
