Hi,

I’m just sorting out handicaps for the courses we’re playing in Portugal in a few weeks. First time I’m doing this, usually just use the eg app! Got a spreadsheet on the go and everything!

Question really is about whether to round up or down, finding conflicting info. The one player for example, is coming out with a course handicap of 15.6. Hole19 says 15 shots, an online calculator says 15, another comes out at 16! And when I google whether to round up or down, it says round up if .5 or above, round down if below.

We’re just using 100% by the way.

Can someone confirm which it is please?

All I will say is don't trust Hole19 for playing handicaps etc. I use it but it's been well out of date with some of the shots it suggests. On one course it said I would get 16 shots, when in actual fact their course ratings had changed and I only got 8!

Use normal mathematical rounding.

Thanks all. Turns out it was my error inputting the formula into excel!
I believe excel will round down where golf needs to round up. In excel 15.500000 will round down to 15. In ‘machine calculated’ handicaps 15.50000 wil come out as 16.

When I say excel, it’s Google sheets, just checked and it follows standard maths rounding so we’re all good, but thanks for mentioning that, wouldn’t have known.

Ps - never doing this again, I’ll just stick to paying my money and turning up when told!

Well, that’s just wrong. How the number is “rounded” should be an option in Excel.
15.5 becoming 15 is a truncation rather than rounding.

I think it might be an option , but excel is not in my portfolio of ‘ excel’ lant skills . See what I did there, sophisticated comedy.

Rounding in Excel can be done using several functions, with the most common being ROUND, ROUNDUP, and ROUNDDOWN. The ROUND function allows you to round a number to a specified number of digits, while ROUNDUP always rounds up and ROUNDDOWN always rounds down.

Did not want to start a new thread so this is a query re WHS and SOFT CAP.

At the end of last season, say 1st October, my last 2 scores meant my handicap increased by 1.5 shots. Am I correct in thinking if/ when my handicap increases by a further 1.5 shots BEFORE 1/10/25 soft capping will apply?

Yes, then if it increases by a further two shots, the hard cap will kick in limiting all upward movement.

This will also depend on any increase before 1/10/24 and what your low index was at any time in the preceding 12 months to date.
The cap kicks in as soon as you are 3 above the low index index for the previous 12 months is reached (remember the low index is a moving point as it is date based).
