Right chaps, what's your club's current policy on the closure of the course (parkland only, as links courses are clearly different) in inclement weather? Does the Head Greenkeeper close the course, is it the Ground Convenor, or both of them, or a Greens Committee, or the Pro? Or does your club follow the very odd "the course closes itself" policy, which basically means that although comps are cancelled the course is virtually always open?
I would like to hear your views prior to a meeting next week. Many thanks.

The decision is normally taken by the greenkeeper as he's the one on the ground and knows if its playable and can assess the risks vs staying open. To be fair the club trys to be as accommodating as it can (temps, closing some holes if waterlogged etc) to ensure members can get some type of game in.

On our course i think its a mix of the course ranger and the pro....There's usually 1 or 2 of the holes that if there bad they'll just pull the plg on it and close the course until these hole are playable... Having said that it would have to be exceptionally bad as our course never plays off temporary greens or tee boxes for that matter.

I think a lot depends upon what type of club you are a member of. Is it a private members club or a course commercially owned and run or is it a Muni?

I think all will have different takes on what ans when a course will be closed.

Regarding the OP, I think our Greens Convenor and the Head Greenkeeper make the decision as necessary.

Our course has been open all through this bad weather as its a council owned course but its certainly roughed up the greens. Our headkeeper would decide if it came down to it, along with the pro .

Its down to the head greenkeeper at our place. Both our courses are generally only shut for snow, thick fog and if it is exceptionally wet(the JOG course has a stream/river running through it which can flood). The Cathagena is built on sand and is dry even after a monsoon. Both courses usually go on temps if there is a sharp frost.
