Course closed again !!!!

This is the reason I travel further afield and pay slightly more at my course for membership.

Its been designed with good drainage in mind and rarely closes.

I was down Cumbria earlier this year and took my clubs - I managed only 9 holes due to course closures etc. so hugely frustrating.

Fantastic day here in Irvine Scotland for a change my course Bogside is very very rarely closed because of rain. The only thing is I am backshift and had a long lie what a waste of a great day.

Same here in sunny Sneckie, blue sky with the sun shining, working today though:(

I hope we are closed on Sunday. Hawkeye and I have our winter knockout. He's flying back from Vietnam at 5.00am and I'm trying to get my swing to fire so I could do with a bit more time. Even if its open it will be a nightmare

The weather has got no better since earlier this year! My home course has really suffered this year, currently using mats off the fairway for the first time in living memory and half a dozen greens out of action for drainage work. On a positive note my away course is in good condition, very soft for a links but very playable if you avoid the 4 small lakes that have formed in low lying areas in the last couple of months. Very odd sight of greenkeeper wearing waders the other week whilst trying to deal with one of the 'lakes'

With the amount of rain forecast for today on top of what we've already had I can't see many course's draining well enough for a good few days (or longer) unless they are sand based.

I think this is going to be a long wet winter :(

Fed up.
On top of all that, I read last week in one of the national papers that we are going to get the worst winter in 100 years this year?
I really hope they are wrong.

The long term weather forecasts are a load of *****. Most sensible forecast agencies have given up on making public pronouncements for over a month as it makes them look silly (BBQ summer when it was the wettest on record, mild start to winter when the temps didn't rise above zero for the most of December etc etc etc).

They do still sell medium to long term forecasts to interested industries such as retail, but they do not make them public. As all that happens is on a quiet news day some lazy journalist will completely misinterpret what they are saying and make some silly headline like 'Worst winter in 100 years'.

So for example from a golfing perspective is it worse to have days which are very cold and dry or days that are mild but constant rain? The first example would probably generally be classed as a worse winter as it is colder, but from a golfers perspective the second is probably worse.

The 2nd is worse, I can handle cold & dry.

Were open today "pull trolleys only".

However, there is huge amount of rain forecast for this afternoon but then dry Friday & Saturday so wouldn't it have been better to give the course an extra days grace?

Do you think if your course is just about playable with restrictions (carry only etc) it should be open or should it be rested that extra day?

Fed up.
I only have a couple of days off work & was looking forward to getting out for a game.
I arranged a four ball for today, after not being able to play yesterday due to the incessant rain.
It rained pretty much all day yesterday & all night last night, it's still chucking it down now, I have just had a message to say the course is flooded & shut.

The winter has only just started & already the ground cannot take any more water, parts of our lovely course are showing signs of very bad damage due to laying water & other parts are getting churned up into a mudbath.
It won't be long before the greens start to suffer, which will be a disaster as our greens have always been in fantastic condition, I am worried that the constant rain will cause irreparable damage this winter that will impact on next summers golf.

Mentioned on your earlier post on this that as an ex-member I know where you are coming from. Clay-based course and in direct firing line of south-westerlies wind and rain off the Bristol Channel. danger is that damage will be so severe as I know what it gets like - and - yes - could really mess up May and June golf - maybe into July. I suspect you are just going to have to go temps to keep folk away from the greens and surrounds as much as possible as it's these areas that get dreadfully churned up - right of first green for one heading to second tee. Barn fairway used to get soaking as did Twin Oaks (17th) before the ditch. Don't know how the two 'new' holes (High Fioelds and Dog Leg) have developed - but when we built them the base material used was s**t and drainage was hellish. All the best.

Our course is badly flooded. As for it reopening,i think its more likely to be weeks rather than days.

Added a few pics for effect :D

Looking towards 2nd green from 300 yards out.
3rd hole from tee.
4th hole from tee.
5th hole looking back towards tee.
7th hole looking back from green to tee.
8th hole from tee.

Think i might need an invite from another forummer,if i want to play golf this weekend :D

I gather you have a river through the course that has burst it banks? Where is this?

Played today and was surprised how "good" the course was. Certainly wet underfoot but not a lot worse than at the weekend and only a few areas of casual water. Most balls plugging so it's playing long and got fed up of cleaning the mud off my clubs after both practice and actual swing! A few more greens with GUR areas marked and a VERY high fast flowing river so hope the forecast rain tonight doesn't tip that into flooding.

Looking at the 5th photo, now thats what i call a long carry over water!!!

Well I reckon what's coming down outside now is putting paid to any golf tomorrow.
It honestly looks like the End of the World out there.....

Anyone got a boat?

Mungo, saves me having to go and take some pics. Drove past this morning and it's not looking any better, more rain through the night abeit not much. I also think it'll be a week before we're open.

The River Sowe runs through the course which is designated flood plain. When Coombe floods we get the overflow, generally drains very well but maybe the rain will win this time.

It came down something rotten in Stoke last night, but this morning, nothing but glorious sunshine.

With a bit of luck, it'll drain off and I'll be able get a game in tomorrow!
