in a open seniors comp, last week. i came 2nd to the winner who was also in my section . so i thought he would be the overall comp winner and i would be elivated to section winner and 3d to 2nd ect.. is there a set format for this , anyone know ?

No set format each organise committee decides there own process, most common is what you expected so one person only claims one prize but there is no hard and fast rule this happens.

When we have a comp run in divisions (or sections), whoever is 2nd in the overall winner's division moves up to 1st in that division.

so are you saying that the winner from my section will win the overall winers prize. and my section 1st prize too. i always thought you could only win one prize simples no
Alex
You were 2nd in your section and you got 2nd prize. If you were the winner of your section you would have got 1st prize. Simples.

Did you expect to get upgraded?

The guy who won the overall prize wins the overall prize.
The guy who finishes second in the section wins 2nd prize in his section. 1st prize in your section is null and void.

yes i expected to be moved up .thats normal practice in any comps ive played in over many years

If the overall winner came from your section then he gets the overall, 2nd in your section ( you) wins the section etc .. thats way it works in our place..

can get bit confusing with gross tho, i came second a few weeks back , second prize was a pair of golf shoes , but as i had best gross i got a tee shirt & the guy in 3rd got bumped to second & got MY shoes

not in our place , theres Overall prize , Gross prize & winners of section 1/2/3 prizes .. if you are second & the guy in your section wins the overall or the gross you get bumped up ..

We have 3 cats, results are based on the cat position 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each, winner of the medal overall (lowest overall net score) gets the trophy but not a second prize as such.

doesn't really matter as long as what happens, and which prizes go where, is clearly understood before people go out and play!

(in the same way as how a tie is resolved)

was advertised 4 prizes in each cat , 1 overall winner, and a lowest scratch prize

in the absence of anything (else) that states that the overall winner and/or lowest scratch prize winners did not qualify for category prizes, I would interpret this that they would collect both and that no-one 'moved up'. This would include overall and scratch prizes!

If there was a statement that no-one can win more than one prize I would expect a priority statement, that prizes reflect that priority, and that people do move up within the categories if the overall and scratch prize winners are, effectively, removed from those categories (assuming scratch prize priority was above cat winner which it isn't always)

good info. thank you

In our monthly medals and stableford the field is split into divisions and prizes are given for top three per division. Honours board events are one field and first past the post. The club champs has a gross and nett prize and it is possible for the winner to take both as happened last year.

Caused a bit of contention but the committee said they was them there rules and the decision stood. Never seen it happen at Ascot or any other club and definitely not this year.

I'm all for gross deciding club champs (best golfer in the club) but no way I'd want to play comps every week gross only. Hardly fair for 90% of the field and no point having a handicap
