As I thought, we don't have one, our Pro has taken the job on. Well you would wouldn't you? It's a source of income. IMO, our comps are, in general, rubbish. So, after a bit of a chat with a few of the lads, I've thrown my name into the ring to do the job. I've contacted our club secretary about it with my thoughts, and also with the provisio, that I'm left alone to do things as I see fit for a yearm before they pass judgement. Why? Well it's because there have been two comps lately that I wanted to play in, Saturday comps, but none of my group wanted to play in them, and I couldn't get in with others ( we don't use BRS to allow us to book in to comp on a weekend, we have to go via the pro, who is a lovely lad, but rubbish at his job). I don't think my proviso will get past our new board, as some of the original board are still there who are power mad. We will see. Board meeting today apparently.

Well done for stepping up

Unfortunately I think your proviso might force them to decline your offer to help though.

"...that I'm left alone to do things as I see fit for a year..." doesn't really give them much wiggle room

I absolutely applaud anyone who wants to do committee work at a golf club, especially comps and handicaps. I’ve done it, and it’s a thankless task.

So I tip my hat to you for volunteering.

Always worth remembering that it’s a no reward job and that there are multiple rules to follow

It’s a thankless task but don’t do it on your own get a number of volunteers in to help

Doing things that you see fit may not be the right way or how the members see fit

Well done. I suggest you get a couple of volunteers to help with the chores and to bounce off ideas. If you trust them, they could have input into the annual h'cap review. But you need to have control for the full year. Brook no interference from the secretary or other outsiders.
Rewrite/update the Local Rules and other competition & GP procedures
Good luck.

If they don't already exist, you must have comprehensive written competition rules, both general and for all formats of comps. That way you will be teflon coated if there are any problems. Get hold of a copy of the official guide to the rules of golf and read the Committee Procedures section.

Well done for putting your name forward. I've done a bit of volunteering at our club helping to run club night , it's gone really well as there are 4 of us doing it but it has been an eye opener on what members pick up on and complain about..... although a £10 voucher for the weekly winner is bound to turn heads and bring out the dark side in people!

Well done for offering to do it.

I spent 13 years on the comps and handicap committee and still do handicaps.

When there is a committee not everybody agrees.

One of the things I find annoying is when a well run comp gets changed by a new committee does not go as well. Happened to our club champs this year.

Just out of interest, what does a new competition secretary bring to the table? Apart from changing the dates and introducing some different formats, is there anything else that they can do?

In addition to publishing almost everything, enforce the RoG & RoH, keep an eye on 'outlandish' scores and ensure the course is marked/set-up properly.

Enthusiasm? Organisation?
A couple of common changes:
  • checking scorecards and applying the rules!! Sounds basic, but it's surprising how many clubs don't do these things, especially if left to the pro.
  • updating/creating Terms of Competition. Many clubs fall behind in this important area.

“that I'm left alone to do things as I see fit for a yearm before they pass judgement”

I’m not sure it is a brilliant idea to have only one person’s ideas and ways of working to be the sole way of doing things for an entire year with no parameters or input from others.
36 hole men only medals every Saturday might be great for some but certainly not all, just as weekly Texas Scrambles won’t either. Jacking up competition fees and prizes ‘to spice things up’ for example wouldn’t be popular.
You have to cater for the whole club membership and ensure that there are opportunities for all, in terms of Juniors, Men, Women, Seniors, Mixed - those who like fun comps and those who only want ‘serious’ golf. Inclusivity is vital as the membership is normally very diverse iand what one person and their mates think is great is rarely that for all.

Surely that is the basics that you would expect every club to adhere to - or am I being a bit generous?

Really? Thought this was the basic requirements?

If you manage to please more than half of the members most of the time, you'll be doing well. I generally enjoy the job but there are times when I do wonder why I put myself through it ...
