Coincidence or suspicious ?

Played a singles tie today and I'm playing my usual pro v1 with a couple of blue dots either side of the number.
Common enough I hear you say. But these are pro v1 practice balls with PRACTICE scored out with a black sharpie...not quite so common.
The ball was a number 4.
Opponent was playing a Calloway.
So we're all square after 3 and I snap hook my drive off the 4th tee, he hits a decent drive. I then cream a 3 wood over trees on the perfect line...shouldn't be far from the green. My opponent then plays up before I can see the end result. He then marches up the fairway, looks at the ONE ball just short of the green and leaves his bag next to it.
I catch up and there's no sign of another ball where I expect mine to be but we look for it and there's no sign of it.
Given the situation, I concede the hole.

In retrospect I should have checked his ball myself.

Anyway. Fast forward to the 16th and I'm 1 up. I hit a good drive and my opponent slices into the trees and plays a provisional down the fairway which finishes close to my ball.
When we get down the fairway I notice his provisional is a number 4 pro v1 with 2blue dots either side of the number and with PRACTICE blacked out. Exactly the same as the ball I " lost " on the 4th.
As I was in quite a good mood as I was just about to go dormie 2 up, I just made a joke of it and said that his ball looked very like the one I'd lost. At this he just muttered that he had found it.

I won on the 17th so I suppose its immaterial now but it did seem very strange and left a wee bit of a sour taste.

surely when you stood on the first tee shaking hands you declared your ball and it's markings. I always state my ball make, number and markings to prevent any confusion. Now with this scenario I would suspect he found your ball and decided against declaring the fact. Even if the ball was found after the concession, it's common coutesy to hand it back if found.

Glad you got the win, but if I was in this situation I feel a copy and paste of the above to the competiton secretary would be in order.

either possible, and add that he may just have made a silly error in picking up a ball but 'forgetting' when discussing you missing one on the 4th.

if he did make such a mistake he is now unlikely to make it again

i do find it extremely difficult to conceive that he deliberately removed your well marked ball then subsequently put it into play against you - obviously possible but???

True. I did ask my pro and he says they are legal.

Both products may be used in the casual round of golf including those with scores posted for handicaps, and most competitions, with the possible exception of high level competitions invoking the Local Rule requiring balls to be on the List of Conforming Golf Balls.

The above is a quote from the Titleist website referring to the pro v1 and pro v1x practice balls.

The word "PRACTICE" is considered to be a logo, no different to getting your own name or company name on the ball.

Being just 3 years into playing the game i would consider myself an apprentice in contrast to some of the years that some of you boys on here have been playing for........

But it amaze's me the amount of people that have no clue as to what ball they are playing.....It a simple task...You name what your playing on the first tee so everyone knows and then thereafter if a ball may have been lost.....

And why is it that when your playing a tour ball some muppet that has been playing a rock decides to put his stamp on it even though there could be a difference of 30 yards between where they lay?

It does seem to be a tad suspicious. As you won it is academic but I would have made a point of asking him afterwards where he'd found it and when just so he knows that you know that he picked it up and the left it at that. It wouldn't have mattered if he'd said "the 12th last Thursday" he'd have known what you were really asking. I doubt for one second it would have pricked his conscience for future matches and I've no doubt he'll pull the same stunt again if he can (leopards changing spots and all that) but at least the next time, if there is a next time, he'll know you have his number

Way too much of a coincidence for me. Sounds like a cheat and you should of asked him where he got it. If he was genuine he wouldnt of had a problem explaining it.
