Clubhead speed!

Having quicker swing speed does not automatically equate to further distance with the driver.

i'm about 100 and don't hit the driver anywhere near as far as i should compared with my irons.

all the Clubhead speed tables say i should be about 250 carry, but only get about 230 carry as i'm just not connecting with the driver as i am with my irons

I accept that but was wondering/hoping the smoother swing would actually give me more speed as there is more time to complete the turn and swing through. Intrigued now and will have to get the pro to measure me soon!

The key is to transfer as much energy to the ball as possible and is often referred to as the 'smash factor'.
You will lose speed if you hit the ball with a glancing blow or hit it out of the toe/heel etc.
So a slower, more controlled swing may give a higher smash factor therefor hitting it further than a mad slash at the ball

I had a lesson last night on the launch monitor and my driver CHS was up 6mph from 6 months ago to 117mph. I purely put this down to hitting lots of balls therefor increasing my flexibility giving me a better coil. I am 5'8" and not particulary "athletic"

If you're off 18 with that swing speed, you must have a rubbish short game ;)

Ha ha I had my first lesson with a new pro last night and that was exactly what he said, especially when I was trying to show him my bad shot and kept hitting a nice fade down the middle! It was only when started hitting my push slice OOB did he understand. Working on bumping the hips and releasing the clubhead. Been said many times "the woods are full of long hitters"

I would suggest lowering your swing speed until you can control it and find more fairways

I don't really see the point of a fast swing speed if you're just going to be wild off the tee.

I agree with that. I can swing at 105 mph but it is very erratic and I lose all form. When I control my swing at around 95-98 mph I am much more consistent and straighter (and generally longer as I am not slicing or delivering a different attack angle etc)

I guarantee you, if you had a 90 mph driver speed, you would hit it even shorter.

So speed does equal increased distance, but technique is the factor that gets you maximum distance for the speed you move the clubhead.

don't agree, ive guys i play with get the most out of their swing, one guy sticks it well past me and he is 90 at most.

as Bob says its about more than CHS, Smash etc.

Dont agree.
He could and often will hit it further with a 90 mph swing

You think that without changing technique at all, swinging slower hits it further? That defies physics.

Swinging slower might allow for a better technique, but in of itself, less speed does not increase distance, quite the opposite.

It's about both.

If you solely slowed your clubhead speed but applied the exact same technique, you wouldn't hit is as far as you do.

Technique is the most important thing, which is what I've said all along, but clubhead speed is rarely (ever?) detrimental to distance, it's just not the most important factor.

I have had a few lessons this year and the pro has had me making some slight changes to my swing

With the changes he has got me making, at the moment I am swinging roughly 6-7mph slower than previously yet I am averaging a longer carry due to better technique and improved impact

So swing speed is most definitely not the only factor when it comes to total distance

What are these changes? Can't work out why you would swing more efficiently but lose that much speed.

I would guess the result would be an improved launch angle and the amount of spin imparted on the ball. No idea how that has been ahieved of course, could be a plethora of things.
