Club Fitting - Grips and tape

I was fitted for my irons at DG in walsall and on the whole they did a good job. However they never mentioned anything about getting the right grip size. My mate went to Mizuno in Wrexham and they measured his hands and put four lots of tape under his grips and they feel a lot fatter and better than mine. In a pro's opionion will this really make a lot of difference. I have read that it can cause you to miss hit shots if the grips are too thin - is this true or false please ?

When I was c/f at Titleist they didn't bother measuring my hands, but just worked through the options. 1 layer of tape, too thin, 2 layers, too thin, 3 layers was better, 4 layers of tape and everything went to the right. Couldn't square the face at all. So I use 3 layers of tape with a lamkin crossline grip.

In theory, if he grips are too small, you will find it easier to close the face and hit left, if too big, it is harder to square, and it will go right.

If a custom fit is done properly, they should measure the length of your hand from wrist crease to tip of middle finger and the length of middle finger.
Roughly speaking, when you grip a club, your fingertips should be just touching the plam of your hand.
As always though, it's down to the individual and what feels comfortable to you and if you are hitting the ball straight, don't fix it.
If you want to check your size, measure your hand and middle finger and see what it comes up with on the chart below

Murph thats really interesting as most of my poor iron shots do miss to the left of the green indicating that they are too small. I have lessons with a pro and he has checked my grip and club face position and is more than happy with it - I think i will try that ping link below and see what it comes out at. As usual, many thanks guys.

I got a new set of irons in January. Had them custom fitted and the pro measured my hands and decided i needed two wraps of tape under the grip.
The differance compared to my old irons is amazing, i feel like i have alot more control of the club.

He did say that if i needed them to be thicker or thinner i could bring them back anytime and he would change them free of charge, maybe take yours back to DG and see what they say?
