Club Distances

It is interesting that the average golfer under clubs into greens (apparently). Is it because he doesn't hit 200 yard average 5 irons afterall?

It could remain a mystery.

I once hit an 8i 180 yards, into a pond. Soon cured me of that. 140 max now.

My yards are accurate yards, i miss greens wide generally, but part of the post was to see if everyone actually knew (plus to check that i am a light weight), i see a lot of guys playing short of the green having expected to flush it to 2 feet!

i think by the posts half of them havnt a clue or dont want to say so just take the piss mate :D

I must be the longest straightest player on the forum

9=220
7=260
5=300
all straight
Sorry driver=450 carry.

Good shooting Pokerjoke... I might not be the longest with my irons but my minimum drive carry is 667 yards... I'm nomally hitting back to Par5 greens that I've carried :p

I did think someone would be longer as i havnt been hitting the ball well lately.

crikey i'm not really sure what to put down on paper tbh

some days i hit 9 iron 150 , some i can only get it 135 and others seem to come in at 125 for some reason.

I guess the real answer would be what club do you think will get you to the target. I'm not bothered which club it is but would prefer it to be one with more loft.

I suppose I have a rough idea of yardages but it depends whether i want to go in hard and high , easy and soft , low and running etc etc

I could probably hit 3 or 4 different clubs to the same distance but all under control

It all just depends how I see the shot and how I feel i'm striking the ball on the day.

Jesus, i hit it practically nowhere compared to some of you

You play off 12 so dont think you have much to worry about mate

That's the spirit!

I only found my lack of distance a problem on the days I played to 5 or 6 and discovered that there were 5 or 5 holes I couldn't get up on. :) :D

If you can putt, you'll make birdies if you keep hitting greens. If you keep hitting greens, it doesn't matter which clubs you took.

I'd like to hit it further to make my life easier on the longest holes.....oh, and the uphill ones, oh, and those needing 200 carry off the tee over the jungle of gorse...oh, and par 3s over lakes, oh and for the longest drive prize....

This comes up every now and then on the forum and it's always the same.
"I hit this club this far. Its not always straight though."

Instead of trying to hit it a long way and straight, why not learn to hit it less distance straight?
Surely a 5 iron that goes straight 170yds-180yds is better than a 5 iron that goes 200yds all over the shop?

It depends on how well I'm striking the ball so it can vary. At the moment:

9 iron - 130 yards
7 iron - 150 yards
5 iron - 170 yards

That is about 15 yards a club down from the summer but I have been working on shortening my swing to imnprove my accuracy.

hey bob with you all the way this one. Problem I've got isn't direction is contact. I hit it fat far too often! In fact my distances were based on solid contact. If it were based on my poor strikes that I'm trying to whittle down it would be

9 iron 10 yards
7 iron 10 yards
5 iron 10 yards

I'd happily sacrifice distance for a consistent connection. :D

9 iron - 135
7 iron - 155
5 iron - 175.

All in still conditions and with a smooth strike. Can force them all a bit further with a knock down or if I decide to give them the full treatment. The full treatment tends to lead to a loss of accuracy though so I try to avoid hitting at 100%.

Driver tends to carry around 270.

Ahhhh....the old 'Willy Waving' contest.....cant beat it can you !!

Quite frankly, there are some on here that are hitting the ball so ridulously hard to gain those distances, that its a wonder you have any clue at all where its going, and some clearly dont !

I dont think I 'ever' swing at more than 75/80% of perhaps what I can, as when I do, I know I'm less likely to hit my target.

i think the 5 iron 200 yards but one of my buddies can hit a 9 iron 140 off a tee so we are all diferent. appologies for the suggestive talk in an earlier post to Pete, never realised he was a junior. :(

It's called 'grooming' isn't it???? :mad:

I have no idea how far I hit each club - it changes every time I hit the damn things!!
The best example of this was the last time I played. I had 140 left into the green. I evaluated the conditions, etc and opted for my eight iron. I middled the bloody thing and it ended up fifty yards past the hole so, by that reckoning, I hit an eight iron almost 200 yards. Not a chance.
During the same round I had less than 100 into the green, opted for my PW. Middled it again - came up short. So, I can hit an 8 iron 200 yards and my PW about 40!!

That's why I work in an office.... :)
