Club Championships

Genuinely surprised at some of the ways club champions are decided by at some clubs..
Ours is 2 consecutive days - 18holes - scratch qualifiers. 130 entries.

Gents 1st class, 2nd & 3rd class
Top 8 after day 2 go through to play matchplay against each other..
Quarters, and semi during the week for each division.
Then we have a finals day at the weekend.
Gents 1st class is 36 hole matchplay..
2nd and 3rd is 18 hole matchplay.
We also have a seniors gold, silver and bronze over 18 holes matchplay.
The ladies final is also on the same day over 18 holes matchplay.
Presentation late afternoon the same day.

If players of both sexes played off the same tees then it would be an Open competition not a Mixed one.

In order to achieve an equitable result rated tee sets and balancing shots must be used even in scratch competitions.

There are a few relatively prestigious regional competitions at Junior levels where girls and boys compete in scratch competitions on this basis.
Indeed - we are hosting the England Mixed Under 18s this week- mixing the tees the girls play off to balance things.

Of course my original question comes from the club a few years ago OK'ing Lottie Woad to play in our Gents Club Championship (though in the event she was unable to play). I am almost certain she'd have played off the club's back tees - though they aren't rated for ladies. If you want to compete to be the absolutely best golfer in the club then there has to be totally level playing field with everyone - male and female - playing off the same tee.

This really depends on how many members you have, how active and competitive the membership is. I'd say your club is at the extreme end of things.

Certainly sounds like it... Even the club I played as a junior and into the men's had similar... As in it was 2 day qualifying.. Then knock outs via matchplay.. And that was a 9 hole course.
Maybe it's a Scottish thing.

A couple of years ago a prestigious club near me opened up the Club Championship to men and women. The men played from the Blue Tees CR 76.2 and the lady (only one entered) from the Purple Tees CR 79.8. The lady received an adjustment to account for course difficulty. Her adjusted score beat all the men, albeit her gross was not the lowest of the day. She was crowned Club Champion.

Should it also include ladies…playing off same tees as gents? Best golfer is who is sought after all…

On that a question..if back tees are not rated for ladies does that matter for a scratch competition?

Think when it comes to ladies and men playing in scratch comps it’s not truly scratch because there is always some sort of shot offset depending on the tees etc

There is no reason why the ladies club champs can’t be run alongside etc

But most have them during their normal comp day

If you want equal access for all they should both be run at the weekend so why not on the same day? We have done this for quite a few years and it’s an excellent club day. Works really well.

Adjusted my grammar error

But most clubs run their ladies champs when it suits the ladies which is normally their regular comp day

Well it being 2025, we actually have quite a few junior girls, so midweek would be a school day. Also some of our women members unsurprisingly have jobs during the week too, so running it during the week doesn’t give equal access whether this, as you put it, ‘suits the Ladies” or not.

You may have missed the point but the ladies run the ladies club champs and they put the competition when it suits their membership as a majority - can’t suit everyone because there will be ladies that can’t play during the weekend - so they go for when it’s best for as many as possible

Not if they want to have the most opportunity for all players to be able to play.
Our club has run the Women’s Club Championship at a weekend for well over 20 years. Otherwise you may see exclude some of the younger, perhaps better, players. This is equally the case at a lot, if not most clubs locally. It is 2025.

Most of our ladies don’t play at weekends so how is it giving the most opportunity if it’s played at a weekend 🤷‍♂️

And it’s also run during the summer months so that if there are any younger girls they can also play

Each club will do what’s suits their members

Most clubs do what they've always done rather than what necessarily suits their members. Clubs are glacial in making changes, particularly ones that might suit younger golfers. It's backward thinking and restrictive to working women and school age girls.

Which is why the major champs are during summer months , why we also extend some major lady comps to the weekend

Juniors have been able to play in all our comps bar one

But it’s always worth remembering that there is a finite amount of space on a golf course and most only have 1 and a full memberships so it’s hard to fit everyone even more so when there are prime spots which are normally filled by those mon to Friday members

Equally our Seniors Club Championship, if it were done just to be convenient for when the majority of the Seniors play their golf, would be run midweek. Of course it is not as that would exclude quite a few over 55 year olds - it is again a weekend competition.
Golf clubs need to realise that it is 2025 not 1985.

Our seniors champs is midweek just like the county senior championships are

Closing the one course at the weekend during prime time for anyone under the age of 55 isn’t great

Ours last year was 36 holes over 2 days. Lowest handicaps out first on Saturday and then best scores out last on Sunday. Whoever was lowest gross was club champion but the top 8 also went through to a matchplay event for a different trophy.

I’ve been told it’s 36 holes in one day this year as that is the usual and last year was a bit of an anomaly.

Regarding the original question, that'll obviously be, whatever entry suits the individual club and members, can there really be any other answer?

If there's only a few low players it doesn't make much sense to have a club champs based on scratch, jeez it might just be a fourball going out one day

Horses for courses

That doesn’t make sense at all. The club championship is supposed to identify the best players

Sounds like a golf club for people who don’t have jobs or children.
