Club Championships

All 7 days members. 😉

Our club has a gross and scratch prize. The scratch winner is the club champion, obviously. The net prize has a different name.

Yeah ours has probably had about 20 competing max last couple of years and probably 5 can legit win it

We also have a nett 36 hole comp earlier in the year I don’t know why they just don’t combine them

Tbf even that’s normally full as the high handicappers hate it

We could probably have the Men’s Ladies juniors and a nett comp all in one day and it would be manageable

Nothing worse in golf than a golfer calling himself the Club Champion when he/she has won the club handicap prize.

I think there should be a single figure only entry clause to any club championship. [12 at the absolute max.]
Have a separate event for the high handicappers but don't call it the Club Championship

I’d be embarrassed to be the handicap club champion

Ours is open to all with but you chose if you want to enter both the scratch and the handicap champs. There are no Divisions for the handicap champ and prize money.

These days we do not get enough going in to the scratch to even have a ballot

However I have not been involved with organising it so it might have changed. Used to be 2 consecutive days for handicap and 36 on the second day for scratch but we have reverted to one day for both for this year.

It will be interesting as it was the scratch players in the main that requested 2 days for the handicap so they did not have to follow them out for their second round.

Ours is 36 holes scratch, anyone.

It was on one day and limited to lowest 32 for donkey's.

From last year it is 2 consecutive Saturdays and if you want to play from 7:30am to 1:30pm you are in it.
On the first day there is a Board Trophy for best net 10-18 handicaps and another one for 19-silly handicaps.

Second Saturday, there are net prizes to be had, but the main event is the lowest gross scores over the two rounds.

So it is possible, though highly unlikely, for a 15-handicapper to be lowest gross over 36 holes and be club champion.

"Inclusiveness" in an absolutely extreme and uncriticisable way, but only with regards to inclusiveness issue.

What do you mean? It's better than being the champion of nothing! I wouldn't call myself the club champion though, that's all.

I’d be embarrassed to say “I won the club championship (with a nett 68)”

I understand the idea of running a handicap competition concurrently to attract a larger field, but just call it something else. The Orikoru Cup for example.

I found out today that somebody I've worked with for the last 5 years was given an MBE by the queen 10 years ago for services to charity. She's never mentioned it.

I have friends who have medals they received for military service in armed conflicts. They don't talk about it.

This seems like real world stuff to be proud of but they have the humility not to bang on about it.

Unless it was for comedy effect, I would be embarrassed to describe myself as the champion of a local recreational golf club regardless of the scoring format.
To the UK's 60 million non-golfers you'd have about as much credibility as someone proclaiming themself the local dungeons and dragons grandmaster.

Yeah that's what I mean, I don't think any club would call that the club championship would they? Maybe you'd say the "net club champion" at a push, but I get what you mean, it sounds a bit silly. To be honest our actual gross club champs is officially called the Heath Scratch something or other, but everyone knows it's the club champs. And the net one is the Hymardun cup. Presumably named after people who played here 100 odd years ago. 😁

I can recall at my old club, some idiot took over organising the club championships, switched it to Friday/Saturday because he and his mates played midweek and then made the first round a random handicap draw. One of the top players had two 28 outs with him whilst he was trying to shoot a low score. The second round was low scores last of course but it was over five hours as all the high handicappers were insisting on holing out on everything even if they were going to score 100+. He did not get to run it again.

And I am totally in agreement about the net winner having a trophy by a different name. The Club Champion is exactly that, the lowest 36 hole gross score. Glad I've got a few of those sitting opposite me on my shelf

Our Club Champion gets his name on the "Scratch Cup".

The top 8 go into a draw for the Scratch Matchplay trophy that is called the "Curry Cup".
Don't go jumping to conclusions - it was founded by Sidney Curry - from the family of Currys Electrical stuff.

The way it works - 36 hole strokeplay qualifier then knockout - perhaps the Curry Cup winner has a claim to be the overall club champion?

I've had 2 of the scratches and 3 of the matches, so I'm "Not Bovverred!":LOL::LOL:

(BTW: The original Currys was a bike shop in the centre of Leicester, then they started to sell those early gramophone players, and the rest as they say...)

Anyone can enter. There's a cup for scratch and also for net over 36 holes on a Saturday and Sunday. Both days were full.

The Top 15 gross scores and last year's champion, qualify for a scratch matchplay knockout to decide the Club Champion. Only the winner of this goes on the Board.

Club Champion is the best golfer in the Club. There's plenty of handicap events for the rest of the members.

There's no need to boast or brag about it and in my experience the club champions that I know don't.
However it does carry an element of kudos and pride, in the same way as winning a local 10k or triathlon or other sporting event in a way that a handicap competition doesn't really.

Regarding the original question, that'll obviously be, whatever entry suits the individual club and members, can there really be any other answer?

If there's only a few low players it doesn't make much sense to have a club champs based on scratch, jeez it might just be a fourball going out one day
On the other side, lots of good low players should definitely get to play to be champ without the dilution (pollution) of many dozens of mid/high cappers taking part and impacting the pace and course

Horses for courses

The men's championship at my club is run over 2 days, Saturday is like any other competition and then the top 12 gross play the following day, winner is best 36 gross over the 2 days. Lady's is 36 holes on the Sunday with a handicap restriction.

Same for men at Flixton, just down the road from you. Top 12 & ties play on the Sunday.

Open to all, but with a requirement to have played a minimum number of qualifiers during the previous 12 months.

Played over two days, the lowest overall gross wins. Simple. And with nett divisional prizes.

No need to limit numbers as the take up isn’t great. I haven’t played for years as monthly medals off the back tees are tortuously slow. Club Championship even more so.

5+ hours on the course two days running? No thanks.
