Club Championships

Ours is next Sunday

Open to everyone.

36 holes best gross is the Club Champion (only players with scores of 85 or better in the morning qualify for the afternoon). Best Nett score from the morning 18 is the Handicap Champion

Ladies also play 18 holes on the same day and best gross is Ladies Club Champion, best nett is Ladies Handicap Champion.

Prizes also for best Gross and Nett for Senior golfers (>55) and for Super Senior golfers (>65) for the morning round...these were categories introduced around the time of covid to boost participation and engender a bit more togetherness in the club....waste of time if you ask me and are just prizes for the sake of giving out prizes....especially as the Seniors Committee run their own Midweek Championship, which garners far more entries from Seniors (than the main Club Championships), as many of them are 5 day members or simply dont want to play at weekends.

Ours isn't until the 19th of this month, 36 holes on the Saturday. Lowest handicaps out first.

There is also an 18 hole handicap competition on the same day between the morning and afternoon tee times for the club championship.

Playing handicap of 9 and under for the club championship and interestingly you must have a playing handicap of 10 or over for the handicap competition. Basically all single figure handicappers are forced into the club championship that day if they want a game which most know they have zero chance of winning, there is maybe 3 or 4 guys that could win it although 1 of them is the firm favourite considering he's won it 13 times. I don't mind as I just want a day out and to see if I can score under 160 for the combined rounds.
Imagine a time when, the lowest gross scored in the day is by a 10+ handicapper, who isn't eligible to be Club Champ. My mate did that about 10-15 years ago. Played off 12 or 13, and on Day 1 of Club Champs went round in level par. He ended up winning the Club Champs that year :)

I detailed ours in #74 then a week later we were informed about some significant changes. It is now 36 holes on Sunday 27th. The net trophy which always ran alongside the scratch trophy is now a stand-alone comp on the day before. They have also put a handicap limit on the actual championship.

Having just looked at the list of starters, there are currently 25 entries, with the field being limited to 75. It would appear that with no supplementary prize to play for, only those who seriously think they have a shout are entering.

Ours is this Saturday, 36 holes and so far 33 have signed up for it. Last year the only prizes were top 3 and the 2’s. I got the only 2 in the second round and got more for it than my mates who finished 2nd and 3rd. 😂

I played a 36 hole championship in one day once before, absolutely despised it. Didn't help it was over 30 degrees Celsius.

I don't mind playing golf in mornings, and then having afternoons and evenings free. 36 holes robs you of pretty much the entire day, and is exhausting. Are we looking for the best golfers, or the fittest golfers?

Thankfully the club changed it to a Sat/Sun event

Yeah, I had to do it last year for a knockout final. Luckily it was foursomes so I only hit half the shots, but it was still a long old day. I'm glad our Club Champs is Saturday & Sunday. We know the dates well in advance so I'm happy to book my weekend with the wife for it. And I still have the afternoons free.

The main club champs I play in each year is for a nomadic club I’m a member of. 36 holes over two days and rotates around 1 of 4 (very) different courses
This year its not at my home club so days off booked and 3 nights at hotel needed too. It’s a full on 2 day event with evening dinners/drinks/party each day as well as prize giving. Really look forward to it

Roll on Sept ...

Exactly what I'm expecting. I'm not exactly the picture of health and the only time I've played 36 in one day my hips decided they had had enough by the 12th on the second round and I just couldn't rotate anymore. I'll need to ration the battery usage on the trolley as well as it's only an 18 hole battery and also 6 years old now. Luckily the course isn't too hilly, it's pretty flat.

I'm expecting the second round to be a write off but I'll enjoy a couple of pints afterwards and get the wife or oldest child to come collect me.

I've just seen that our Ladies held their CC over the weekend....
The winner won by..............36 shots....
Yep 36
To be fair she does play off 1 and the next best off 15 but even so....that's what you call emphatic....
And she only missed out on the nett by 3 or 4....

36 over Saturday and Sunday
Had to play both days (obviously) so that may have been the reason..middle of Summer etc.?
Maybe something for them to look at. I don't blame people for not wanting to commit to two days of golf, certainly not when they have minimal chance of winning. People are far more time aware now, clubs need to respond to that.

7-day members only. HI limit of 28.0; Juniors 9.0 or less. Usually have 110+ entering. 36 holes medal over a weekend (last weekend of August) with a cut (top 60 scratch plus ties) after Sat round. Scratch and Handicap prizes. Club Champ is best scratch. 2nd round goes out reverse order with best from 1st round out last.

Yep...there are other single figure ladies at the club but, for one reason or another, they weren't playing
There aren't any ladies of that standard at mine. Eleven entered their club champs this year, the gross winner shot 90 and 92. (Handicap 21)
