Club Championships

Ours is open to all. First round of two is tomorrow. Fewer than 10% of the membership have entered.

Depends on the nature of the club championship , but if places are limited you want the best players there . It's not a championship if your plus players are ballotted out.

Nothing worse in golf than a golfer calling himself the Club Champion when he/she has won the club handicap prize.

I think there should be a single figure only entry clause to any club championship. [12 at the absolute max.]
Have a separate event for the high handicappers but don't call it the Club Championship

All 7 days members. 😉

Our club has a gross and scratch prize. The scratch winner is the club champion, obviously. The net prize has a different name.

From club competitions handbook..for separate scratch and handicap comps run concurrently. Scratch (i.e.gross) winner is Club Champion. Two rounds played over a Sat and Sunday to allow for maximum number of tee times for entries. Cut for 2nd round at Top 60 and ties after 1st round. Our draw for threes is structured to ensure that the better players play with players of equal or similar calibre.

Eligibility Male Full/7-day member – All competitors must have submitted at least at least eight WHS scores that contain a minimum of four competition scores played at Farnham in the previous twelve-month period.

Handicap Index Entry Limit 28.0 (Juniors must have a handicap index of 9.0 or less at the time of entry)

Nb - no balloting out. Reserve list in operation if full. There are usually 3-4 reserved tee times that are kept available until a day to two before the comp weekend so that very latecomers or change-of-minders with low handicaps wishing to play can still get in.

Open to all, but balloted by handicap if over subscribed - all other comps should be 1st come 1st served.
Same for us: 21 spots open.
I'm debating whether to bother or not... and given there's a plus 4, 2 plus 3, several scratch players and the number one disabled golfer in the world at my club, I'm not sure I'll bother! 🤣

In answer to the OP though, I've always felt the club championship should always be a gross comp only. And if I was a 2 capper trying to win it, i wouldn't want to be paired with a couple of 20+ cappers - too distracting. So some form of split would be in order, maybe cat 1, cat 2, cat 1, cat 2 and repeat til close, and have a separately titled comp for the nett.

Our club championship is open to all, 36 holes over the weekend.

Big talking point is whether they will send out a buggy with water/drinks as we have no halfway house or water fountains on course and the rounds are.notoriously slow.

Ours is limited to 12 and under and it's a scratch comp. It's run over 2 days.

On day one they also run a comp for those over 12, h/c comp just to flesh out the course as our membership is not large. On day two it is the second round of the club comp but the course is open to anyone else who wants to play, socially. They may buffer a few slots, I'm not sure.

In all honesty, it isn't a big deal at our club.

Ours is balloted on handicap (but not normally required)

Low players out first on Saturday
Low scores out last on Sunday

Ladies play their own event in amongst it.

There is a gross & nett prize, and a senior club champs (55+) in the preceding week.

Top 16 gross scores qualify for a scratch knockout.

I play off 3.2 and I’m of the opinion that it’s not even targeted at me, I just make up the numbers really. I’m often about 20-25th lowest handicapper in the field and about 17 of the last 20 club champs have been won by just 2 people.

Ours is drawn by handicap first day and by gross score second day, so you wouldn't have that scenario at least.

I should add players go out in handicap order day 1, day 2 2 tee start top 60 qualify going out in score order. Women have their Championship concurrently on the same day. This year for the first time we had an overall champion (as well as Women’s and Men’s Champion) who was one of the Women (+handicapper).

Yeah ours is exactly the same set-up, including the separate knock-out for the top 16. But the difference is you'd be among the favourites at my club off 3. Last weekend our club champs were won by a 9.7! (Yes the scratch prize. He was 13 over after the two rounds.)

The men's championship at my club is run over 2 days, Saturday is like any other competition and then the top 12 gross play the following day, winner is best 36 gross over the 2 days. Lady's is 36 holes on the Sunday with a handicap restriction.

Why does it matter? We're talking about local recreational golf clubs. It's not of any real life importance. The really good golfers probably don't even bother entering.

Old club was open to all 7 days, tees on Saturdays grouped by handicap with auto qualification through to Sunday.

New club is 36 same day with a Hc cut of 12, fancy trying it this year just not sure my wonky knee will do two rounds in same day.

We are 36 holes in one day. No handicap restrictions. Go off in groups seeded by cap in the morning and gross score in the afternoon.
There aren't many over 10hcap playing, so numbers aren't an issue. There is a net prize as well, but nobody cares about it except the person who wins it!
