Afternoon all... What are people's opinions on the on going saga of jeans etc on the course? Do you reckon it might encourage more people into the game?
I dont think people are put off solely because of the attire that is generally accepted as the norm.
But would some of the more experienced players feel threatened in a golfing sense by "youth" wearing THEIR normal street attire on the course/clubhouse.
I think as long as its smart/casual/pubwear, its fine. No hoodies or vests though please!! :p

I wouldn't like jeans to be worn on the course. have no problem with them in the club house when your up for a pint.

Dont fancy playing in jeans myself, too hot I think.

Golf clubs need to realise time moves on and youngsters will look elsewhere for a sport to play if they are required to wear a collar, tie and jacket to have a pint after a game. I know I would, who's gonna bring a suitcase to the clubhouse with a change of gear in it after 9 holes midweek.

Golfing atire should stay as it is. trousers/shorts with a collared shirt

I spend all week in dirty jeans and scuffy t shirts but at the weekend i can dress smart for my golf which i feel is a major part of the game

New people to the game should wear the atire its will make them feel good

They wouldn't turn up with a hand full of clubs and carrier bag of balls would they?

Andy thats what it was like at my old club.

I had to pack a weekends worth of clothes if i fancied a pint afterwards which is old fashioned

Finish work on site -change from work gear into golf gear

Have a knock then blazer and tie on for a beer

My new club had a BBQ on the go when i got there this afternoon fantastic

i have to agree with andiritchie, that the trousers and collared shirt should stay

but i do think its a bit off them wanting you to wear a blazer and a tie for a pint. the two courses i play at dont ask for this so im ok

OK, lets say we allow jeans.
Are they to be a specific type of jeans or are we then being pedantic?
Next we will have the young uns turning up in the "street" jeans hanging off their arse...... No Thank You

Vig,

Jeans are jeans in my eyes.

Its called fashion and it moves with the times. Any jeans in my eyes are smarter than a pair of chinos.

I thought the blazer and tie thing was going out of fashion. The Captains dinner maybe requires formal dress, but just to go into the clubhouse after does seem a bit fuddy duddy.

And I thought I wanted my eyes testing

Jeans aren't jeans though are they?
Some look smart some certainly don't.

My son bought a pair for £150, I nearly choked.
I see kids with them 4 sizes too big, under crackers on show down to the nick and full of holes.

I'm all for smart jeans but please don't say that they are all the same :D

You are already creating a dress code. Surely it is just a matter of how far you are willing to take it.
As for me, I am content to follow the code of whatever club I am playing at.

I think the blazer and tie brigade will eventually die off (there will be some clubs caught in a time warp but when membership starts declining etc etc). I am happy with a collared golf shirt and trousers as long as you change out of your golf shoes before going into the bar. We played a club match yesterday which would normally involve a sit down meal (jacket and tie job) but the club decided to go for a full breakfast first and have a buffet meal afterwards which didn't need a change of clothes.

Whilst I do quite enjoy getting dressed up formally for club diners and some matches given the weather yesterday it was a real blessing and the fact that it wasn't a full on meal in that heat too was great. Top marks for the change

Agree with the Blazer and Tie, its a mare after a hot round of Golf, which some times has taken 41/2-5hrs, then a quick shower and to the meal, just to sit there sweating your arse off :o

Jeans on the course, not sure if happy with that myself, not on my home course, though if its good in the local ruling of another club I have gone to play then be it.

Its easy enough for these youngens to go out and spend £40-£50 on a Footy Shirt, what is the difference spending the same on a Polo shirt and a pair of Chino's :D

What has what you wear got to do with anyone but yourself. These old fashioned rules are a menace. I can well remember a club pro giving a junior an unnecessary talking to for wearing a T-shirt. Knowing where he lives this was probably his Sunday best. Lets get rid of these snob driven "rules".

I dont have any problem with jeans, the problem I have is that many jeans look like a bag of you know what! where selected jeans look really smart and can often be mistaken for trousers.

I think dress should be judged more on its appearance rather than its make(I have been a member at one or two clubs who are enlightened enough to ignore a smartly attired golfer who isnt wearing the required listed form of dress), as there are so many makes of slacks and trousers that look untidy, just as there are jeans that look smart or untidy.

Perhaps the only way on ballance for clubs to address this issue is with a dress code but also encouraging judgement of the individuals appearance. In other words, if someone turns up in a smart pair of jeans that are as good as trousers, dont turn them away for the sake of a guidance rule.

until this year I have only ever played muni's and so have worn jeans to play in the past and played with people who also have. The place I come from (Corby in Northamptonshire) is predominantly working class and I have seen people playing in just shorts before with no shirt!

I am looking to join a club at the minute in Sheffield where I know live and whilst I enjoy the smart dress of nicer courses I am put off by the stuffy blazier brigade as they have been referred to that some of them have. Just want to play golf
