caught the odd bit of this when the bleedin ads were on during the pga.

read this on another website, wish I'd though of it....

'Just think: two weeks ago the world thought we were rubbish at sport and great at music'

says it all really...

Saved the best to last...

With the track that takes me back to my youth more than any other...

Shame though that something appeared to go wrong with the sound when JessieJ tried to emulate the late great Freddie Mercury...

To be fair, the 45 minutes of "music" was ****. The rest of it was awesome. The Who, Eric Idle, Darcey Bussel, Freddie, May playing Brighton Rock(!!!), all made up for the utterly pathetic, talentless Ed Sheeran, Liam Gallagher, Annie Lennox and The Spice Girls.

Incredible two weeks.

I can't see why they can't have an hour at the end of the final day once the athletics has finished whilst there's 80,000 people just sitting there: a few speeches, a few thank you's and congratulations, praise the Olympics with another speech or two, pass the flag to the new nation and switch off the flame.... trying to make it into a concert is just lame to start with.

I'm guessing it's a money thing?...a few £100 to attend the closing ceremony is it?

Closer to a couple of thousand I would have thought. It wasn't that bad guys, true there were a few bits that were a bit iffy and it wasn't on the same level as the opening ceremony but on the whole I thought it wasn't that bad. My favorite acts were Jessie J and Muse I thought they were both quality.

I was wondering how they would manage to hide the Spice Girls total lack of talent. It seems the plan was to split them up and keep the camera moving from one to another at quite a distance.

Overall I enjoyed the music - as with any collection of music across ages and genres some I liked more than others. Not a great fan of One Direction or Ed Sheerin - but they were there for the kids and they are big overseas. I'm guessing not many kids thought much of Ray Davies or The Who - or seeing Nick Mason team up with Mike Rutherford et al for a bit of Wish You Were Here but I did - excellent.

Music aside I thought the lighting effects were absolutely astonishing - if you actually think about what we were watching. When the whole stadium was used to shown the sound waves when they first played Freddy Mercury - wow! What a great Olympics and very spectacularly bookended by Wiggo winning the Tour and Rory winning the USPGA - both in fantastic stupendous ways.

As a wee collection of four nations - GB & NI is not too bad a place.

As soon as I saw the words, One Direction, The Spice Girls and Ed Sheerin, mentioned I decided to Sky+ it and watch the PGA instead. Am going to watch it tonight and zip past all those that don't appeal to me.

One things for sure the Olympics has been compelling viewing and the athletes have given the country new and very worthwhile heroes and role models for future generations to follow which are leagues ahead in class than that of our nations footballers

I thought the lighting and staging was brilliant but was disappointed with the line up.

Jessie J is a post X-Factor wannabe with no real back catalogue. And I think I missed the irony of her singing an anti-materialism song (Price Tag) from the back seat of a £270K Phantom! One Direction are appalling as was the black girl with blonde hair. And who decided to let Big Gay George to sing his new single that no-one had ever heard before or cared about? Liam showed why Noel was right to jump ship with his flat nasal whine too.. The low point though was seeing Brian May use his chance in the spotlight to push his animal rights agenda with badges on his arms depicting a cute fox and badger!

Elbow were good, Muse too and fair play to Gary Barlow for turning out after his recent tough times.

All that said, we gave some of the best music to the world so why were last nights turns so B List? The Who were superb but where were Led Zep? Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones? Kate Bush? Bowie? And more recent legendary turns like the Stone Roses? New Order? Coldplay even? What about Radiohead?

It was slickly staged and beautifully lit with some excellent set pieces, notably Darcy Bussell but overall, I thought it was a bit of a missed opportunity to roll out the real big guns and show the world what talent we really have in our musical locker.

I agree with you on some points, but Jessie J, love her or hate her has been writing pop songs for people long before she was famous herself. She's got a decent set of lungs and was the best of the "modern" acts that appeared last night (not including Tinie Tempah who was awesome, as always).

Madness were terrible, Pet Shops Boys were terrible, Ray Davies wasn't great either, but he's been in bad health - but he certainly shouldn't have been performing. George Michael? Annie Lennox? Seriously? Who thought that was a good idea? Horrendous.

Brian May played Brighton Rock which made up for the rest of it. It was great to see Freddie still managing to command an entire stadium from way beyond the grave.

The Who (well, the remaining half) were excellent - Dalts showing the other pensioners that just because you're old, doesn't mean you have to start singing out of tune.

Darcey Bussel was immense and Take That were predictably good - and as you say, fair play to Gazza Barlow for making an appearance, he must still be in bits.

Eric Idle dropping the "S-Bomb" on Live TV in front of billions of people was brilliant as well
