Closest Links Course to Birmingham

Walked past it last month when walking the norfolk coast path, planning to go back with clubs in spring, hopefully play there and maybe Sheringham and Cromer too Played them all when I was much younger, definitely on my list to revisit

Forget Cromer and Sheringham, Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster) is streets ahead of either of them. I personally prefer it to Hunstanton as well but its a close call. There is just a special aura about Brancaster, it's like stepping back in time.

For a real 'fun' round, check out Great Yarmouth as well, located inside the racecourse. Very linksy and loads of fun.

Been looking into this over the last few months due to all the rain we have had and so many courses closed, except links.

I even enquired to 6 courses for distance membership and only 1, Wallasey GC replied!

I reckon Burnham & Berrow is no more than 90 minutes for me which I think would be similar to all of them on and around the Wirral, although I think the M6 has more known potential problems than I have encountered on the M5 so going South West I think is more sensible.

Does anyone have a distance membership anywhere?

I have one at Hayling, another very good true links course.

Much quicker surely to find a free draining heathland course.

My course has only ever closed for snow since I joined five years ago. Woodhall Spa was playable when we had the old farts whippersnappers match, and the rain that day was biblical.

As the title suggests really, does anyone have recommendations for easiest to get to/shortest distance courses you could drive to and back in a day and would still have enough winter sun hours to play a full round.

I agree, there are some very good Heathland courses around Shropshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

Take a look at Kington and Minchinhampton Old. If you are in the area let me know, I am a member of Worcester Golf and CC (Boughton Park) A beautiful parkland course and Bransford Golf Club, a Florida lakes type club.

Can you honestly compare a heathland course to a links course? Surely there played very differently!

The only heathland course I have played is Blackmoor which I enjoyed but, I played at Saunton Sands last March and the experience was fantastic. A group of 24 from my club go to Saunton every March for 4 days and I luckily dropped in as a reserve last March so now I'm in again for this March.

Its not just about being able to play if my course is closed due to weather but being a distance member of a nice links course I think offers a different test of golf and I want to enter, and have done, some opens such as the Wirral Classic, Wallasey Open and more so I want to experience more links play and of course enjoy some fantastic sea views whilst playing.

I've played at Minchinhampton. Very nice course and clubhouse.

Was it the 'Old' course. The New course has two 18 holes and is more Parkland than Heathland.

It was the Avening. Very nice, parkland with some nice picturesque water hazards. I think the Old course is down the road and has cattle roaming on it, I was told at the time!

It did have my pet hate though, internal OOB

I think it is one of the areas of Britain that is furthest from the sea.
Fantastic turf though, probably the best I have played off.

Meriden just up the road (2 minutes) from me is the centre of England and by definition has to be also the furthest from the sea. What with all the fresh fish suppers being talked about, access to great links courses, I wished I lived closer to the coast.
