Can only speak for Slaley but the hotel is really nice, spa facilities and the food is really good too. Hotel prices (obviously) in the bar and even if the course is wet but playable then for £99 its a steal.

You look for the catch, it is natural, but there isn't one. They just want people using the facility, spending money, during the quiet spells.

Just out of interest, I'm interested why you found Rockcliffe "bland"...??
Never heard it said before.

Plus, I'd be interested to hear your views on what you consider a good golf hole on the colt?
IMHO, theres maybe 3 that standout to me, the rest are pretty forgettable

Most people rave on about, or remember, the colt, for its presentation and condition, as its generally immaculate, not many shouting on about how many great holes there are.
In actual fact, I'd say your own home course had a better, more interesting layout, design wise. 👍

The rooms alone, at close house, should be costing more than £99, such is the quality, let alone golf and food thrown in too

I’d say the same about Rockliffe, its defence is its length.
It’s relatively flat and the greens are the same.
Lovely condition, but a big hitters modern course for me, the Colt has better more stand out holes than Rockliffe.
What Rockliffe can offer is the Spa and hotel.
It’s quite pleasant we can have opinions on 2 top courses in the region.

It would be a boring world if we all liked the same courses :D. I found the defence of Rockcliffe was largely about length. It was long and featureless, I don't remember any great design touches that stood out, made a hole extra clever. Bearing in mind it is a built to order course that is a mistake surely? I remember on a few occasions looking around and not seeing anything of note, nothing to warm the heart. Now I totally accept that your opinion of landscape, what is interesting or pretty is subjective. Perhaps I need to play Rockcliffe again, I have only played it once. Maybe a second time I would appreciate it more, maybe my expectations were too high first time? I should add, we have not played together, that I struggle with length. A hitters course is a big turn off for me and Rockcliffe is undoubtedly a big boys course.

It terms of CH, The Colt, I'm afraid I am terrrible at this game. There are very few holes on ANY course that I can remember, I am just one of those people. I just remember playing it last and smiling quite often, thinking how well laid out some holes were. I am not claiming all holes by any means, but I certainly smiled more than at Rockcliffe. I went off the yellows and I found it manageable for me off those tees. I would also add that if you offered me a free round at any of the 2 at CH or Rockcliffe then I would take The Filly option. That may say more about my level of play of course :D.

In terms of the OP I was concious that if he stays at Rockcliffe then he would play the same course twice. It would be more interesting, IMO, to stay at a course where you can stay and play a different course each day. For DRW he may be better going to Rockcliffe or Matfen as they have the spa option for his good lady, something CH can not offer. I was lucky enough to stay over at Rockcliffe as part of a corporate event last year and it really is 5* star level.
 
This thread just reminded me that it was around this time last year CH were offering vouchers for a round on The Filly for a tenner. Is it too much to hope for that they do likewise this year?

They did it on Black Friday and then again at Christmas.
The £50.00 Food voucher for £25.00 was excellent value as well.(y)

I get their newsletters, follow them on FB so should get the info through as soon as it happens. Once the deals are released can we agree to post it so we all see it and can fill our boots again :D?

I think I got 2 rounds on the Filly and my son got me a lesson there for Christmas as well on the deals last year.
 
Here's another one for you, George Washington, Washington Tyne and Wear. It's a proper golf course with a lovely layout.
I've been told they've spent a fortune on the drainage, which was previously an issue.
