Hi all,

During every round, I try my best to keep my clubs dry and clean - use a towel, tee to keep the grooves clear etc, and religiously clean my clubs, but I just use ordinary washing up liquid and water on the clubhead itself, making sure to keep the grips dry and dry the clubs themself ASAP. Even though they were only a cheap set, i quite like them and want to make them last until i can afford a decent set, so my question is, am I using the right stuff to clean them or will ordinary washing up liquid do them any harm? What does everyone else use?

I must confess to being a bit of a compulsive Golf Club cleaner. I clean mine every fortnight with nothing more than water and washing up liquid. Thing to remember is to make sure you allow them to dry properly and not just shove them back in your bag.

I'm with Madandra on the really hot water thing though. Although I can't honestly believe that hot water will have the same impact on a golf club as a blowtorch it's best to air on the side of caution. Nothing worse than hitting your ball up the first hole and watching in disbelief as your clubhead heads off towards the clubhouse window ;)

DHM.

I'm careful to not wet the ferrule too much. I have seen two clubheads and shafts come apart in a round due to soaking.

I use washing-up liquid and occasionaly barkeepers friend! (on the heads)

You should only need to wipe down the rest, with an occasional toothbrush and soapy for the grips. Depending on the quality of grips, they can go for years.

Same as the above here.I clean mine after every use with soapy water and every now and then give my grips a scrub with a nail brush, it gives them a freshen up too.One thing that does bug me though is ive got a sky mark on my 3 wood which id love to get rid of,ive used a felt pen but it comes off after a few uses.Any suggestions.

I had the same on my warbird a few years ago and I used 800 wet and dry on it them 1200 wet and dry to polish it up. I ended up doing 6 guys in the club.

I remember being told that you shouldn't use washing up liquid on forged clubs as the normal washingup liquids have a fair bit of salt in them. I wash mine with warm water with a bit of car shampoo added. Gives them a nice shine if dried off with a chamie leather and then rubbed with a clean dry towel.

Looks good even if the golf doesn't!

I didn't know about the really hot water weaken the glue on the ferrol better use cool water next time. I wash mine every saturday (while the wife watches x-factor) :D

I generally clean my clubs after every round using soapy water and a toothbrush, toothbrush gets the dirt out of the grooves.

Every so often i clean the grips with the technique-retains the grips tackiness.

Washing up liquid does contain a lot of salt, so rinse well before drying. It is not just forged clubs that will have a problem with salt either, any carbon steel heads will go rusty pretty quickly in salt water. The chrome finish is not a protective finish, more decorative. Don't use it on your car either...

I don't remember the last time I cleaned my sticks. It rains a lot, so that keeps most of the dirt off, and I use a towel to dry my clubs after every shot. I change my grips every ten years whether they need doing or not.

I can't believe I've actually read this thread - it's one of the funniest we have had for ages. I bet you all spend hours polishing your cars on Sunday morning too.

No, I wash my car every year, and once had to take a brillo pad to the roof to get the green stuff off. The difference is you don't sleep with your car. Ahhh.... shouldn't have mentioned that.
