Didn't Greece win the Euros not long back

Best never reached international tournaments because his team couldn't get through qualifying despite his best efforts - no doubt if they had reached he would have performed because he could do it in the big games when it mattered.

When it comes to a tournament and playing against the top teams Ronaldo isn't there - take 2010 WC for example - against Spain - Ronaldo did nothing , he was invisible throughout the game - he was Portugals big hope to take them through the tournament and disappeared. Against Korea though he scored and had two assists. When he was needed he wasn't there.

Bale turned up when it mattered by scoring the crucial goal in the CL final

Portugal are not a "minor" national team - believe they are third in the rankings behind Germany and Spain and ahead of Brazil

Also been top ten for the last 12 years.

out of curiosity Phil. When Suarez went from a goal a game this season to only scoring 3/8 at the end of season. Or the fact he scored 0 zero goals against any of your title rivals. Does this mean he is also not a big game player. I mean, reading in between the lines. Your saying best would have done it at a World Cup with a tiny nation if they'd got there because he could do it for big teams at club level.

Bale also missed countless opportunities Wednesday night. But the records will show he scored a tap in header. His performance was poor that night, but credit to him for persevering.

I'm gonna desist with banging my head against a brick wall, but if you truly believe that Ronaldo, who has scored European cup finals and semis, countless domestic finals, big derbies and 100's of goals in general is a poor player as he doesn't do as well for Portugal. In games they've been totally out played in btw then fair enough. That's your call. Me, I'd take him over any player on the planet right now.

Agreed. It's one thing scoring hat tricks v Norwich but against Chelsea (when it really counted) Suarez was average.

Phil, you're calling him poor in comparison to other players due to these failing he has, not being a big game player. In your opinion. As has been pointed out, bale and Torres to name two have scored winners in big games. Would you take them both over Ronaldo?

Thats a fair point. Surely it would be fair to say then, that during that period of time. Ronaldo with his goals has been a key part to their rankings. Ergo, he's a top player as he's managed to get his team ranked higher than Argentina and Uruguay for long periods of time?
 
So back to Ronaldo, I actually agree with Phil to a degree.
He is a wonderful player at times but he does nothing for the team, everything he does appears to be purely to boost his amazing stats and ego.
Remember when he was against Barca in the CL final a few years ago for Man Utd? Played for himself the full 90 minutes, taking crazy 30/40 yard pot shots when he could have passed to another player in a decent position.
Saying that though, after watching the final you could say the same for majority of the RM team.

Yep they have done well in the qualification period and getting to the big tournaments and then when it comes to the games against the top teams in the tournaments - that's where they stumble hence why I used the WC2010 and the Spain and Korea games as examples of a Ronaldo being there for his country when needed and being invisible.

17 goals in the CL is hardly doing nothing for your team.

or does Ronnie have to carry the Team as part of his contract?

Nobody played well all the time - that's why they have 11 on the field
 
Ronaldo is an amazing player and anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. His antics make it easy to dislike him
