According to the Beeb Tapper's Dad has done a deal with Prosecutors in the States and is changing his plea to Guilty.

Can't find any info on the deal but with a bit of luck, with the time he's served, he can come home sometime soon...

Anyone find anything else?

Yeah I just heard this on radio. Although they said he had been on bail for 6months in Texas so would that class as time served?
Apprently other people have serves 2years and another 20months for similar stuff.

However, why would he plead guilty if he believed he was exporting batteries for the car industry in the Netherlands

Because the costs of proving his innocence could wipe out every penny he has, and all his assets, and if the court dont believe his defence he would end up possibly getting jailed for up to 35 years. Would you take the risk? America's legal system stinks!

From the Independent......Briton Robert Gibson, an associate of Tappin who agreed to co-operate, was jailed for 24 months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to export defence articles.

Gibson provided customs agents with about 16,000 computer files and emails indicating that he and Tappin had long-standing commercial ties with Iranian customers.

Its a classic Rock V Hard Place, if he pleads Not Guilty, the case takes another 2 or 3 years to come to court, he bankrupts himself and if found guilty faces a lengthy prison term which could be a death sentence at his age

Or

You plead guilty, get 2 years, less the time spent on bail, be could be home in 18 months

Its a no brainer, but its proof of a system that totally stinks, where an innocent man has to plead guilty

America should hang its head in shame

Fragger

Irrelevent surely ? if these batterys were heading to Holland .. not against the law to do business with countries that are not friendly with the USA as far as i know .. all that is relevent are these batterys & where they were going & for what purposes .. from the origional story if i remember (gladly open to correction)was Mr Tappin not meerly the shipping agent .. ?? & was it not a sting operation set up by the US officials .. so they initiated the contact & the delivery ??

If i send something dodgy to you via a courier company , is the courier company at fault for it ? again as i said, its just something i think i remember from the origional story & open to correction

You don't fight extradition and plead not guilty for 2 years to then change your plea.

If you know you are innocent you fight tooth and nail.

Bit like Lance giving up the fight.

You probably do if you're faced with Bankruptcy and 30 years inside if you're found Guilty.

Plead Guilty, take the 2 years inside and walk away or fight it, probably lose and spend the rest of your days in jail - no brainer if you ask me.

All well and good but as you say, irrelevant.

Three people now convicted on this, two went to, or are in jail........if they are all not guilty then the home office needs to get working fast.

but the court system in the States means that many people are not guilty of offences but cant afford the cost of proving their position and are blackmailed by potential long sentences to accept a plea bargain. Hardly a wonder that they get a higher conviction rate!

Disappointing to have to plead guilty.

Sadly, as I understand it nearly everyone pleads guilty because a normal person stands no chance of getting acquitted. Just goes to show that the US legal system (with it's unbeatable, not to mention too-expensive-to-fight prosecuting lawyers) is a piece of junk.

An innocent man should be allowed his day in court. Unless he can't afford it.........hardly "straight" justice..... i.m.o.

Hardly a surprise given the flawed US system and I just hope that Tappers and his family can eventually get some degree of closure no mattr how bitter the pill to swallow and can then move on with their lives

I have no idea whether he is guilty or not given what was posted earlier....

Gibson provided customs agents with about 16,000 computer files and emails indicating that he and Tappin had long-standing commercial ties with Iranian customers.

BUT, regardless, the system is flawed and he probably didn't deserve what has happened to him as a UK citizen, guilty or not.

I think Mr. Tappin's been very sensible by accepting the plea bargain. It's all very well people sitting in the comfort of their own homes and saying that he should've fought to be proven innocent. The consequences of a guilty verdict were unthinkable.

Oh. And this country also offers reduced sentences for a guilty plea.

Taking the plea bargain will get him home faster and that is where I am sure he would rather be. Every single one of us would do the same even if it meant we were 'convicted' criminals. I can't imagine how tough it would have been in prison over there because he was effectively a terror suspect. One thing now is that he cannot come back and say that he was innocent of any wrongdoing as he has signed an affadavit to confirm that he was indeed guilty. We can't argue about the extradition as we were all pretty vocal in our support of sending Abu Hamza over?

I just hope he can get back to some normality in life and enjoy his time with his family and of course play some golf again.
