I've highlighted my chipping as part of my game that could do with looking over.

I had a quite 5 minutes tonight so grabbed my PW and went out into the yard to do some chipping. I remember a tip Brian (SocketRocket) gave on the forum a while back, regarding impact tape. I didn't have any to hand so dubbed a piece of masking tape into the face and marked the edges of the grooves with a black pen. McGuiver eat your heart out

Anywho. Here's the results.

After 10 chips:

After 50 chips:

My question. Are the impact marks on the face a little on the low side? Or are they OK for chipping?

Any opinions welcome as always

same place mine always are tbh. full shots would be higher possibly but just chipping you nipping the ball off surely

I await to be corrected by someone way better placed to answer than a chopper like me of course :)

I'd expect a chip and run to look like that although if I was keeping the loft on and using the bounce it would be higher...

that's pretty much where the mark is on my PW from today's match - just checked! I was 6/6 :)

the only real question I would check is whether you are sure your hands are leading the clubhead through impact - back out for another 10 and see if the mark moves slightly up (1 groove max!)

Depends on what you actually mean by 'chipping' 30-40 yards off the fairway?

That seems to be the pattern I would expect from a 'putting style' approach - pitch and run/rollout - (V-Easy?) and wouldn't expect you to be taking a divot.

For the more Driver/Digger style, where a divot is taken and there's more bite observed - still with rollout though - I would expect the pattern to be a little higher up the club.

Nice consistency on the first club btw! Not quite so good on the 2nd.

why do people start with 'forget what you've learned'?

I have no doubt he's an excellent coach, but this is a very arrogant opening approach!

I don't think it's arrogant I just think that sometimes people need to clear their minds first before trying to look at something from a different perspective. There is an an old zen proverb that goes a little bit like this

A young student went to a master to learn, but when he got there he told the master what he knew and what he thought.
The master asked him to make tea, upon pouring a cup the master never told the pupil to stop pouring so the cup overflowed, the student was then told that this was like his thoughts. Because his mind was so full there was no room for more. So the master told him to empty his cup ( clear his mind) as it gives a better platform for learning.

:)

Thanks for the replies all, and the article Ethan

I should have clarified these were green side chips. Ones that would be literally just off the fringe. Ideally looking for a little roll.

They look a little low to me, maybe scared of hitting fat?

That certainly used to be (and sometimes still is) me.
The only problem is when you get one out of the middle it will be 4' past the hole.

I don't disagree with this statement - my problem is whether this is so fundamental, or really ineeds a different perspective. Your reading of it clearly sugests that you took that inference, which, if it's not that fundamentally new/different, seems to suppost my observation!

If others whose reading over the last 30 years has included Jack, Lee, Greg, Butch, Dave S etc etc etc think this is fundamentally different I will be surprised.
