Cheats

If you play well and win a comp with say a nett -6, you will not get cut 6 shot's you will only get cut 1.8 (as a cat 3 golfer). This still leaves said person the ability to go out and still perform way below H'cap before it catches up.

There is much less likelihood of that with the introduction of ESR (Exceptional Score Reduction).

But wouldn't that only kick in after multiple rounds?

Will kick in after 2 rounds - not necessarily consecutive - of scoring -4 or better. The Handicap Committee can always look at players who have shot better than handicap (but not necessarily as much as -4) on more than one occasion in a short period of time.

People mention that some try to keep their h/c high to win comps, but if they did that they would go down as soon as theyve won, so could only win one comp anyway! I'd hardly say thats worth all the hassle is it?

I would guess that it would be done to give them an advantage in singles and pairs matchplay comps where they are very unlikely to get cut. There are a lot of regional or nationwide match play knock outs (e.g. Volvo) and also open better ball comps throughout the year where prizes are well worth winning. If you and/or your partner have false handicaps then it makes it easier to do well. Often you will come up against similar golfers who just happen to "play out of their skins" on that particular day.

I am maintaining an artificial handicap, my head tells me I could go pro... my scores tell me I am shite :)

any git that does it on ppurpose is only cheating themselves and will be judged at the pearly gates as God himself is a golfer :D

Hello all first post - didn't see an obvious intro page.

Anyway, re Bandits; I guess it is how you perceive 'bandit' and what it means to you as it can have a significant difference on interpretation. *disclaimer* I haven't read all above posts so apologies if this has been voiced before, but what I have read of the opinions and my interpretation of the definitions is as follows; 1. Rory is a bandit as he smashed the field in the US Open last year breaking records while he did it! Ridiculous, but he is special and not a bandit - just played well for 4 rounds (it happens). 2. The leather wedge debate - not a bandit just a dirty cheat (not only cheating themselves but everyone else in the comp) and should be banned from competitive golf, (scalable penalties should apply obviously, first offence, second offence, time spent playing etc - ignorance is no excuse) similarly those who put the leather wedge behind the ball to flatten the lie i.e. not playing it as it lies, I believe I saw that at club champs back in 2010, but was not 100%, regardless never played with him again. 3. Artificially maintaining high handicap - sorry, not bandits in my eyes, just numpties and clowns who fall into category 2 above but are even worse! Category 2 are blatantly cheating but these guys are surreptitious - the aim of the game is to beat par and they are intentionally playing not to achieve that! What's that about? Untrustworthy, dishonest, sneaky, 'looking over their shoulder' types. Naive maybe but they wont win in the long run.

So I guess it's all about perception, Rory is not a bandit, leather wedgers are cheats, and those who maintain a higher handicap and do not play to win are, quite simply, mentally stunted.

Apart from the above, enjoy your round :)

I got called a bandit last weekend, half in jest half seriously playing with a work colleague for the first time and 2 of his friends.

I play off 28 and was 4 over par after the 6th hole including 3 par's on the trot and my whole game was on fire!!!... out came the bandit calls and I proceeded to hit a 9 on a par 4 follow by 2 double bogeys giving me a 49 front 9. They soon apologised!!

I'm still learning and know my games improving but consistancy if the problem... I know good holes are in me but finding a good round is hard to come by.

Finished with a 104 and 33 points so about right for my game but still pissed me off that no one praises when you play well!

the problem is the system it self!
your handicap should be either your best ever round then go up from there, or come down as soon as you beat it, or you should put a card in every time you play a round,
one would show how you could play
the other would be a reflection on your general play
some one with a high handicap who works weekends and so cant play comps, but practices 3 or 4 times during the week should improve until he reaches his natural level, but his handicap may not reflect this, does that make him a cheat, or a victim of the system.
yes i know there are people out there who abuse the system but to stop them, as i said the system needs to change

shagster

Bandit to me is more of a social ribbing, few of the younger guys keep stick on horseshoe moustaches in the bag for such occasions, pretty funny when you turn around and the the rest of your fourball all have horseshoe tashes. Keeping handicap deliberatly high for comps is at best bad form at worst cheating, the sort of expression as "im the best 15 handicap in the club by 5 shots" is just wrong

hahaha
