watching youtube and it showed me a more closed off grip so i tried it and was not hitting the ball as clean hooking a few should i keep going with or can you find a grip to suit you ? (maybe i just need to practice the correct grip???)

For every compensation you make in your set up, basically you have to make another in the swing to get the club back square. If you can get a good neutral grip, well aligned stance and good posture then you are making life a whole lot simpler for yourself.

How about getting a pro to give it a look over so you don't get it wrong from the start?

I found it particularly difficult to change my grip.

having a pro change my grip made the single biggest improvement to my swing of any istructional tip i got...

but some pros approach the grip differently - some take the approach of working with what you feel is comfortable and try and work your swing around it - i had many lessons with one pro who did this and i didn't really improve a grat deal...

next pro i went to said I had a "£40 grip" which was the £ he charged for an hours lesson and was his term to indicate that we would have to spend most of the first lesson correcting the grip before we could go anywhere. disheartening as this was to hear, he proved to be absolutely right...

of course there are a variety of ways to grip clubs and who knows which one is "correct" but getting a good pro to show me a stable neutral grip was the best money i ever spent and only took a couple of buckets of balls to get used to...

even now if i start having a touch of the pulls, it will likely be because my grip has strengthened as i've gotten lazy.
