last year i finished replacing my set. Started with driver > putter > irons > woods
purely as i had a starter set from sports direct which in hindsight i wish i never bothered with and got a reasnable 2nd hand set. I had "graphite" shaft dunlop ckubs which where more floppy than a beagles ears! although to be fair i learnt to hit a ball with them from scratch so wasnt all bad and cheap enough to scuff up and not care
I got myself some new ones last summer, they are only my second set, the last ones being about 10 years old I guess. I decided I wanted to concentrate more on golf and take it up properly, so I think mentally it was like a new start, had lessons shortly afterwards, joined a club, joined the forum!
The head snapped off my 4 iron, got it fixed, then the 7 iron went and I realised I could actually afford nice new clubs rather than just admire them in the shop.
Got a new set of woods last year 'cos I wanted a matching 5, 3 and driver rather than the random assortment I'd acquired over the years.
Currently working up to a new set of irons later in the year, maybe; a couple of pros have told me time and technology has moved on and suggested I think about it. Not that they were just trying to sell me anything mind, I'm sure!
Started off with a half set of Petron Impala I bought with my national savings certificates. Kept adding to them one by one until I got a full set and kept them until I improved and went for a set of Ben Sayers Ray Floyd blades
i have had 4 sets in 22 years current ones being ping i3 blades, very tempted by the new rzr balls or ping i20s going to wait till weather warms up and visit a few demo days.
My first set was Howson DJ100 irons and woods back in '92
They were ok, nothing special but they got me to a handicap of about 12 or 13.
Then, to be honest, they just wore out. I had them for about 3 years and played quite a lot and they just gave up. The grooves were virtually non-existent, the heads were full of dents and chinks and I just thought - It's time!
I bought my first set about 10 years ago, at the time i only played 3-4 times a year, i bought them on an impulse. Start of last year i caught the golfing bug big time, so played last year with my old set Ben sayers Irons, 2nd hand titleist driver etc... Now i am very lucky as i live next door to someone that is connected with a major manufacturer, so thought now is the time, the clubs i have bought have all gone EOL now, so got a bargain set of TM Burner 2.0 irons, (now 4-LW inc P,A,S) R11 Driver and 3 wood, TM Rescue 11 4* and a Daytona ghost putter.
Now as i am currently playing off 20, i do look a bit "all the gear, no idea" but i got a good deal and aim to start playing a lot with a target of h/c in low/mid teens by the end of the year. I am a confidence player too, ie Look good, feel good.. so while i might get some looks from people, i really couldnt give a monkeys!!
I got taller so my Benny's were too short, what with them being made for 10 year olds. I then got a set of Hippos and used them for years until the head came off the 5 iron and I bought some W/S Di7s. I then fancied a change and the graphite shafts had become (probably in my head) too light for me so I bought my Mizunos
