Centurion Club - St Albans

I play golf with a guy who is on the grounds team for this place. He has moved mud about with diggers, through to being assistant gren keeper. Hopefully when it opens for play he will be able to get me a game there (I bet there is a long queue of mates on that list) He reckons it is pretty nice, but going to be silly money to join.

I used to live in St Albans and if this is where i think it is its taken them 12 years plus to build it.

I used to do a lot of Mountain biking with a mate who lived on tha outskirts of Hemel and they just used the site for land fill for a good 5 years before i moved back to Inverness.

Must be tha same place was on the right before the a10 flyover coming from St albans to hemel.

I had a promo email from them last week. The total omission about fees told me that I couldn't afford to be a member and I'd probably embarrass myself as a guest anyway. The exclusivity must be wonderful though as it seems to be getting harder and harder to get a round unhindered with the rest of the bottom feeders, if you can even get a tee time at all.

At an initial £5k and then £2.5k minimum per year it needs to maintain a very high standard on and off the course.

My initial concern that would override any luxurious offerings is, it implicates you can hear the traffic from the M1! Personally for me when I'm out on a course, it tics far more boxes for me when I can feel lost in the ambience of its surroundings, paying out that kind of money only to hear the M1 in the background does it no favours IMO but there will be those still happy to pay out to feel they are in an exclusive club.

I hope you enjoy your new club Rick and you get out what your looking from it. What would you compare the course to in terms of quality greens etc and difficulty?

the greens are probably the best of any course I have played this year...they are immaculate....plenty of pin position options and lots of subtle (and some not so) borrows.......but they are flat around the hole so you can confidently roll in the 6 footers.

So how did you fair around it for the first time? Did they let you play it before you shelled out? Did it truly test you?

Not knowing the layout and its not GPS mapped yet, I had to play defensively. Played well and beat another new member who was playing it for the 1st time one up on the last. They are not allowing trial rounds, but they did take me round every hole in a range rover....that was enough...I didn't need to play it beforehand.
We played off the silver tees......the second longest at around 6,800 yds, (there are 5 tee options, the blacks are over 7,000 yds). It's a definite test with a nice mixture of tree lined holes (a la Woburn) with some very pretty long and short par 3's with the rest very much having a links feel.

Are you going to stay a member of both clubs Rick?
For now, yes......The Centurion only officially opened on Monday so they wont likely have any qualifiers until around September.
I'm also scratch team captain and on the committee at my current club, so not going to just walk away. I'll have a re-think later in the year.

Some more piccies below......managed 3 rounds there now so far and remain unbeaten, having won 2 and halved 1.....

They're having a new members roll up on Saturday & Sunday but unfortunately can't make either due to the Club Championships at APGC on Saturday and a Summer League comp on Sunday.....but going up there tonight after work for another knock to defend my unbeaten run... :D

Still finding my way around the course and I think it's going to take 10+ rounds before I start to see some decent scoring.

It does look very nice. Would love to play it at some point...but that really isn't going to happen!

Hi Rick,

It looks great! kind of a mixture between the London club and Woburn?

Happy to make a substantial donation to H4H for a round as a members guest
