i think its true to say the club are not sure what the punishment should be, so wondered what other clubs had done, hence the orig question

First offence; verbal warning
Second offence; 7-day ban
Third offence; winter ban or when the mats are in operation!

How do you police this?

What's there to police, he gets an official verbal warning in front of at least 2 committee members when he's known not to use the mat as stipulated. Following that and if reported that he's not heeded that warning he gets brought before the committee again and banned for 7-days to which he is told in no uncertain terms that if he is found to ignore the ban and is seen on the course then he risks a full blackball from the club! The Pro would know of the penalties so he couldn't book on the course or play in comps whilst the ban is in place, I'd even have it posted up on the boards as a warning to others.

There are club members that adhere and take pride in their course and follow the guidelines from those employed to protect it, then there's those like this individual who thinks he knows best and ignores all the rules he doesn't agree with, it those members that simply need weeding out but given every possibility to change their ways.

I think you would need some kind of evidence once you start issuing bans? Otherwise members who didn't like said guy could report him to club to get him chucked out.

no one is saying you should and i can't imagine any club would issue an ban without a fair bit of evidence.

I know its slightly different, but my tennis club has kicked people out over the years. Some people just thought they were bigger than the club and continually ignored the rules everyone else supported.

One particular man was asked to leave after persistent poor etiquette - shouting and swearing very loud when he lost points, smashing rackets against fences or courts (which also damages club property) etc - just created a horrible atmosphere for other members - he had many warnings and eventually just got told to leave.

Back to the golf club we have had loads of people stealing range buckets and walking onto the range to collect balls and not pay. You see repeat offenders doing it every week in spite of multiple warnings to the membership by email and letter. Some people just done believe in rules. One guy was reprimanded for parking his £220k Lamborghini in the disabled bay ever time he went in the club. Whilst the disabled members watched him as they climbed into their wheel chairs.

I imagine most clubs have reprimanded members over the years. Evidence is always there when multiples members have witnessed these events. The course is sacred - why would anyone want to damage it!

Yep, my club have banned loads of people. The longest ban was 9 months.

The mat rules are there for a reason, to better protect the course over the winter months.
One time warning
Second time penalty
Third time ban
If you keep these rules in the grey area and nothing is done then nobody will care much for them.

I think this would be as bad as not adhering to the mat rules. If somebody wanted to lie about pretending they saw me not hit off a mat then it's somewhere I wouldn't want to be a part of.

You cant ban someone from something they pay for....

Of course you can. You pay to go to the cinema, if you start shouting and disrupting people you can be banned. Just because you pay for something doesn't mean you can break the rules.

So in the Trainers on the course thread you posted about correct attire and traditions, but because your course doesn't use mats and Patricks does your happy to ignore their rule  double standards me thinks!
Personally if it is a local rule I will use the matt, however I was making the point that if somebody was breaking the 'rules' they are unlikely to use a matt regardless in my opinion. If someone was paying good money for a round of golf I can see the temptation as mates kind of spoil it and if I had to use them at my club I would probably just go to the practice area instead. Regarding trainers, i'm a bit of a traditionalist at heart and hate people dressing inappropriately on the course. I also think drivers should be limited to 400cc to bring an element of ball striking back but that's another matter altogether

The culprits have been seen last year and this year. A verbal warning is a minimum they could expect. You can ban members. We had a number of members (including ex captains who should have known better) playing in fog when the marker behind the 1st or the one on the 10th couldn't be seen. Two week bans

Same temptation to wear trainers!

It's irrelevant how you, me or anyone else thinks, if a club has a rule then we should all respect them, free country, go somewhere else if you don't want to comply.

Where did I say I didn't want to comply? I was giving my opinion on someone who knowingly disregards the rule, also trousers and trainers? Great look lol

It's clearly a club rule over the winter and as part of paying your subs you agree to adhere to club rules. These guys are clearly serial offenders, but one or two individuals shouldn't be allowed to get away with it to suit their own agenda. If you don't want to use a mat, don't play
