Carry, Pull or Powered....

Most of our Juniors are advised to get them. Carrying heavy loads at a young age can do permanent damage that won't manifest itself until later in life. They will also play better golf if they aren't tired. Especially as they often play in excess of 36 holes a day.

Mainly carry.

Have a push trolley with an umbrella holder for use when it's raining out. Find it less hassle than messing around with the umbrella when carrying and keeps my kit much drier.

If i'm playing 18, or the weather is 'iffy', its a Powakaddy every time, particularly as you can carry all of your gear/waterproofs/drinks etc without any effort at all.
The difference it makes to the end of your round is considerable to anyone, not least of which my semi-arthritic left knee.

If i'm playing a quick 9 on a lovely summer evening, then just recently i've grabbed the pencil bag for the hour.

Quite why anyone of any age thinks its queer to use an Electric trolley is beyond me, and its perhaps only because you havent tried one yet ?
There will no doubt be some that have tried, and gone back to carrying, but it will be a very small number !

It is interesting that as you get older, you make the swap to light weight graphite shafted Pings, and then choose to put them in a leccy trolley, so you don't notice the weight benefit.

I carry.

At 27 I'm young and fit enough to carry so I carry.

Once I'm old and crippled I'll most likely get a electric trolly and full it with PING clubs. :p

This is a common response for younger golfers but the point of competitive golf is to get the ball in the hole in as few shots as possible, it's got nothing to do with weightlifting. The more energy you conserve, the better you're going to play as you tire.
If people find the whole electric business too expensive or too much faffing about setting it up (it is a bit) fair enough but carrying out of a sense of peer pressure or machismo isn't going to help your golf any. You get plenty exercise walking round without putting extra pressures on the back, knees, shoulders etc by carrying.

Each to their own of course.

I must admit I have played quite a bit of golf already this year, especially over the last month and have started to get a few aches and pains in my right knee from what I think is carrying.
Last week I played 36 holes two days running and carried for all of it and Im starting to feel like I need to protect the knee a bit now so the elec trolley might have to come out.

My back wasnt great after the 2nd day of 36 either, despite the young age!

Thanks for bringing up this topic, Losttheplot, as it's something that's been bugging me for a while. I'm 38 and bought a pull trolley a while back to help my back and right knee, but find that even after 9 holes my back aches (and after 18 my knee complains for days). I'd only recently begun to think it might be strain from the trolley, as I can stand or walk for hours without issue.

So it's interesting to read how people are saying pull trolleys cause them troubles. Anyone care to elaborate further?

Haven't given much thought to an electric trolley, but peer pressure (nearly all my mates are in the "real men carry" camp, so I get enough stick for the pull trolley) and cost have put paid to me considering it seriously without more deliberation. So this thread might be a good opportunity.

So carrying on from my OP, do you think at 27, fit and able, I should feel embarrassed when using an electric trolley?????

It's a free country. If you want to use an electric trolley then use one and don't give a damn what people think. It's not like you are running round the course naked wearing only a "Kiss Me Quick (but squeeze me slowly)" hat.

:D :D :D

Well on a thursday........ :D

Carry. At 35 yo.

I'd feel okay with a trolley but it's more hassle getting ready and packing up after a round. My game is at a level where sometimes you need to get off the course as quick as you can!!

As for powered - yeah, fine for elite amateurs and pro have someone else do the carrying but for the golfer who just plays for enjoyment and exercise - can there be any excuse?

It takes me about 1min to unfolf the Powakaddy, and put my trolley bag on, AND clip on the battery. Hardly time consuming ????

Eh ? Why just Elite/Pro players ? I'm 48, still reasonably fit & strong, and 15stone, but want to feel my absolute best to help in playing my absolute best, all the time.

This quite frankly ridiculous machismo to 'carry regardless' doesnt make sense, - sure, if you PREFER to carry, as you find it more convenient etc, or dont have the spare dosh for a Powakaddy etc, thats fine, but I dont think there is any Professional or 'Elite' Amateur that wouldnt concede that you are likely to play better if you're NOT carrying, but using an Electric trolley instead.

Chris, when the subject isn't Tiger Woods, you talk a lot of sense. ;)
