Bit of a long shot, but my lad's car engine has given up the ghost but the rest of it is sound, so he wants to buy an engine for it.

Apart from scrap yards and auctions, does anyone know other places to try?
If you do get one from either of the above, is it just pot luck whether or not you get one in good working order?

I can tell you it's a 1.2 16v Twin Port 06 Corsa, but I know nothing more technical than that.

Thanks.

Plenty of places sell reconditioned engines with a 3 month guarantee, Especially Ford and Vauxhall as they are the most popular brands. I would say its going to cost you around £500 for one + fitting. Try 247 spares

5 year old Vauxhall engine given up? never though I would see the day. Agreed with the above reply you are going to be in the excess of £1000 for the engine and to get it fitted. Scrap it and buy a new car.

Lots on that popular internet auction site

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_t...uxhall+1.2+twinport+engine&_sacat=0&_from=R40

But at £500+ for an engine (of unknown providence) plus the same in labour and fitting you'd have to wonder why not just get another Corsa and weigh the old one in for scrap / put on eBay for spares or repair?
If you can let me have an 06 plate for £500 I will quite happily buy it off you providing its not been an insurance write off

We were thinking around £500-£600 for the engine and he has someone that will fit it for £200 including a new water pump (the reason for the damage), so should be well under £1k. We were just worried about the condition of a new one especially from places like Ebay.

Surprisingly, comparable cars on AutoTrader and the like are going anywhere from £2k to £3k so if we can get a decent engine I think it's well worth doing.

Its a no brainer, Its well worth doing. Try http://www.1stchoice.co.uk/car-parts/vauxhall/corsa/engine

Exact engine code is Z12XEP so ensure that this is the code that you buy as the Z12XE has different connections (not the twinport version of the engine).
There are numerous sources, try Vx specific forums like Migweb and VXon as you might score cheaper than breaker yards.

I do a lot of conversion projects (mainly Vx) and pick most of my engines up from the above plus pistonheads.
Ebay have a number of Z12XEP blocks but wouldn't pay that money for them, £450 would be the most I would part with for a 1.2 (or any other small block for that matter).

Any competent mechanic should have that swapped out inside a day (It took me 10 hours to remove a 1.2 engine from a Corsa C and replace with a 2.0 block from an Astra and I was working in a normal "household" garage with just a pneumatic engine crane and jack).

No worries Gary.
I will have a scout about this afternoon and see if any of my usual sources have anything lyig around.
As a guide I bought a Z18XEP from a Vectra with 60k on it about 2 months ago and I picked that up for £350. You can save yourself some dough by making sure wherever you buy it from that you only buy the bare block (so no alternator, starter, DIS pack, Aircon pump (if fitted)) as most will be engine + ancilliaries.

Engine + Labour + what you could get when you break the original one for spares = new(ish ;) ) car.

From my experience (of a car with a failed ECU, rather than the entire engine), trying to get new bits of electronics to talk to each other is a massive ball-ache. It isn't just the engine that you'll need, you'll probably also need the immobiliser & alarm ECU (cos the serial numbers of the new engine wont match what's in the memory of the current ECU, so the immobiliser wont switch off), and you'll probably need to change all the door and boot locks to the ones that come with the immobiliser.

I know everyone's different, but for a car that is worth £2.5k in mint condition I don't think it's worth it.

Anyhoos, whatever you decide to do, bon chance

Not true. As long as the engine code matches (Z12XEP) then the ECU will work one engine to the next.
Only where the engine code is different (i.e. Z12XE or Z12XE1) would there be an issue.
I did a 1.8 Z18XE swap on my Mrs old Astra Coop after the sump got cracked and blew a hole in the block and used the existing ECU, the engine I used was from a Veccy but was still a Z18XE so all was good.

For engines, I have used a local co. In the past, traynors. Based over here, I see they have an English depot now which might be worth a shout. They were able to tell me mileage etc and the engine was hundreds less than other so called specialists.
Failing that, get over onto the migweb forums, you will get plenty of help there as they are all vaux nuts.
