After being with Sky for 11/12 years i phoned them up and cancelled as just thought it wasnt worth the £78/month i was paying. I have been given a date of it turning off on the 27th Dec. Do they usually phone up with deals to try and keep you like mobile phone comapnies or just let it switch off ?

I left nearly 6 months ago, they phoned me once but I still changed to virgin media. Now I receive a call from sky almost once a week offering very good deals to return, if only they had offered when i was with them.

My house is up for sale and my Sky is due to double in price next month. Obviously I don't want to pay more and I can't commit to a 12 month contract as the next place I move to won't be having Sky installed.

Do you think Sky will offer me anything give that I don't want to commit to a contact?

Nope.

I cancelled a couple of years ago as I was moving house and they wanted £60 to install Sky at our new place. Out of principle I refused to pay it and said that I would cancel my contract instead. A week later they phoned me with a "Come back to Sky" offer which was free installation and 6 months half price Sky.

I think from hearing stuff from various people is that their new tactic is now to let somebody give notice without offering any discounts and then make that call you mention a couple of days before switch off date.

I did exactly what you did. They phoned me on the second last day and I asked them to call me back the following day (ie last day before switch off).

I'm currently half way through my 'half price' year. Full package, HD and multiroom 50% off. I had to commit to another year but given the discount was for the twelve months it was a no brainer.

Hope you don't mind me using your post as an example, the bold is something I've seen online many times and am interested in the perception behind it

What I mean is when moving home, do we/would we ask the gas company to instal our gas cookers for free or the water board to plumb in our washing machines for free using the same principle. And what reaction do you think we'd get?

There is a difference in that Sky fit the dish and you pay Sky for the programmes they send down the dish. You pay a gas fitter to fit your gas appliance, but you pay a utility company for the gas they supply. There isn't anything in it for the fitter once the appliance is installed. If Sky don't fit the dish, Sky don't sell you any channels. Also you don't have much option in having a cooker, boiler or washer fitted, but you can do without Sky quite easily.

I see where you're coming from but just as the utility gas company has engineers that can fit a cooker, as you point out there are plenty of other independent gas fitters and just as sky has installers that can fit a satellite dish there are plenty of other independent dish installers

Neither sky or the gas utility will get money if the item isn't installed

Every free sky installation is still paid for by the subscribers

edit: and has for it not being essential... I think many houses would rather see their gas cut off before their sky was :D
