Ryder Cup Winner
Ever since Phil Mickelson won a few weeks ago citing his new driver as a massive improvement I've wanted to have a go with one.
I know it's not logical because my swing is nothing like his, but I wanted a hit with it all the same.
A few days ago I went to an AG to do just that, but they only had one in stock and it was new, not a demo. They let me have a quick go.
It was a 9.5 with a stiff Trinity shaft in it, and the couple of whacks I had felt good, but I'm never going to buy it on the strength of 2 hits and without trying the other options.
Wednesday I was looking at the Callaway website and noticed you could book your own custom fitting slots on there, although nothing was free for the whole of March.
A bit later on I refreshed the page out of curiosity and there was a free slot for Thursday. A quick grovel to the boss for a day's holiday at short notice and I was booked in.
I was mainly interested in a driver, but also took my fairway wood and hybrid thinking I'd have a go at those too if I had time.
To cut a long story less long, even though I like the feeling of a light club, I need heavy to keep the spin down, and ended up having a recommendation of a Razr Fit Xtreme 9.5° head in the closed setting, with a stiff Matrix 7M3 Black Tie shaft.
The figures weren't that much different to my own though, backspin being the main one hence my post in the FS section.
I might still end up going for it, but I'm not as eager as I was before.
I hit my hybrid better than anything they tried me with so that stays.
I have however, ordered a new fairway wood. Not the Xtreme that I liked the look of and wanted to work best, but an X Hot Pro with a Project-X Velocity shaft. The shaft is only 71g, it's lighter than my driver shaft for crying out loud, but it just seemed to work.
Inspires confidence at address which is sadly lacking with my own club, and probably double the number of good hits in a batch of 5 or 6 that I'd gotten with my own. I really middled 2 of them and they carried 15yds further than good hits with my own club. Bad ones were only just worse than my own club's good hits.
At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted any more distance with a 4 wood because it leaves a bigger gap to the hybrid, but for the quality and consistency of strike I was getting I'll live with it!
That's the good news. The bad news is that it looks (to my eye) horrible.
The sole looks nice and modern, but the crown is.... well I think the kindest way I can describe it is 'retro'.
Some people may like it. I'm not one of them. Maybe It'll grown on me.
