Ever since Phil Mickelson won a few weeks ago citing his new driver as a massive improvement I've wanted to have a go with one.
I know it's not logical because my swing is nothing like his, but I wanted a hit with it all the same.

A few days ago I went to an AG to do just that, but they only had one in stock and it was new, not a demo. They let me have a quick go.
It was a 9.5 with a stiff Trinity shaft in it, and the couple of whacks I had felt good, but I'm never going to buy it on the strength of 2 hits and without trying the other options.

Wednesday I was looking at the Callaway website and noticed you could book your own custom fitting slots on there, although nothing was free for the whole of March.
A bit later on I refreshed the page out of curiosity and there was a free slot for Thursday. A quick grovel to the boss for a day's holiday at short notice and I was booked in.

I was mainly interested in a driver, but also took my fairway wood and hybrid thinking I'd have a go at those too if I had time.

To cut a long story less long, even though I like the feeling of a light club, I need heavy to keep the spin down, and ended up having a recommendation of a Razr Fit Xtreme 9.5° head in the closed setting, with a stiff Matrix 7M3 Black Tie shaft.
The figures weren't that much different to my own though, backspin being the main one hence my post in the FS section.
I might still end up going for it, but I'm not as eager as I was before.

I hit my hybrid better than anything they tried me with so that stays.

I have however, ordered a new fairway wood. Not the Xtreme that I liked the look of and wanted to work best, but an X Hot Pro with a Project-X Velocity shaft. The shaft is only 71g, it's lighter than my driver shaft for crying out loud, but it just seemed to work.
Inspires confidence at address which is sadly lacking with my own club, and probably double the number of good hits in a batch of 5 or 6 that I'd gotten with my own. I really middled 2 of them and they carried 15yds further than good hits with my own club. Bad ones were only just worse than my own club's good hits.
At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted any more distance with a 4 wood because it leaves a bigger gap to the hybrid, but for the quality and consistency of strike I was getting I'll live with it!

That's the good news. The bad news is that it looks (to my eye) horrible.
The sole looks nice and modern, but the crown is.... well I think the kindest way I can describe it is 'retro'.
Some people may like it. I'm not one of them. Maybe It'll grown on me.

interesting write up. I think it looks ok:thup:

I know what you mean about gapping, I assume its a new 4 wood? My Callaway 4 wood is excellent so if I change to a TM RBZ stage 2 3 wood soon ;) I'd probably go down the 5 wood route and leave out the hybrid, wont know till I try but seems to make sense on paper anyway.

Yes it's a 4 wood, a 3 wood would definitely be too far gap-wise. I had a go with the 5 wood as well (to see if it was as long as my own 4 wood) and it was only 10 yards past the hybrid.

Not that I'd probably do it, but I reckon if I hit the strong 3 wood (13.5°) as well as the 4 wood it could make my driver redundant.

The Callaway rep was out here this week so lucked in to an hour messing about with the x-hot driver & 5w (thought they were all gorgeous in the matt silver finish not so keen on the pro range though)

Currently use the diablo edge 10.5 but used the 11.5 x-hot with standard shaft & the ultra lightweight version. even with range balls I carried the ball further than I ever remember doing on the course after only 3 hits...thought I was in love...until I picked up the 5w!

I knew after one hit that the thing with the driver was just a crush but this 5w was the real deal!

My current cobra s2 5w was bought less than a year ago and only goes in the bag about 50% of the time (course dependent) but I'd swap 3 current clubs out of the bag to get the x-hot 5w in there

I'd definitely give up the cobra 3w & 5w + my driver and use the cally 5w to replace all of them, i thought it was that good. The distance and line I got really impressed

(I was only at the range trying to fix a bit of a slice...seems the equiv of £160 will fix it just fine) :)

Hmmm had a bash with the X Hot 11.5 degree today and have to say I loved it and totally nailed them. Really responsive club and light but it felt in all the right places. Not at all keen on the looks though next to the G25 BUT...it has me wondering...

Just been for a driver fitting, went looking at the Xtreme or 913, tried the X hot as the fitter recommended it and as much as I liked the 913 and the Xtreme I could not ignore the X hot was around 10-15 yards longer than the Xtreme which was longer than the 913 and consistant on off centre strikes too with a good grouping. Just got to wait for it to arrive now but I was stunned at what a good driver it is, anyone thinking of a new driver should try one. Have to say i'm not 100% on the looks but it is not offensive.

Interesting that there wasn't a huge gain from the driver but there was with the wood...not sure I like the look either
I can't really see its worth a change...maybe if the D3 head-swap comes off.
Maybe Murph can do you a deal on his now he seems to be going Extreme....

It's very reminiscent of the original Big Bertha drivers and a couple of ranges after that. It looked right on them, doesn't really cut it nowadays..

bloody hell Gary, you are taking over RickG's mantle and catching me up on club changes ;)

I have to say I love my cally razr hawk driver and the razr hybrids, TM better be special next week!

I wouldn't worry about looks, surely its performance that counts

Just for fun I compared pics of the TM RBZ, the Ping G25 & the Cally x-hot driver heads & leaving aside the colour & paint-jobs, the crown (what you see at address) of the club-heads on all three clubs are near as dam identical in shape, so what makes a good or bad looking driver?

Is it the colour, paint job or decals (the go faster stripes) or is it the underside that you see when its in the bag?

I thought the Callaway looked much more rounded and kind of bulbous rather than sleek and bullet-shaped. Then yes the paint job which looked like the cheap Prosimmon type clubs. Also not keen on the pattern on the face either. That all being said I didn't like the look of the Ping irons either but a few rounds with a demo 7 iron and the results changed how I viewed them for sure.

The X Hot driver gave the worst results of all the driver set ups I tried. Because of the light shaft (and obviously the way I swing the club) the spin went up to about 3,500rpm. In fact, 2 of the hits with the 4 wood carried further than the best hit with the driver.

Because my recommended driver was a 9.5 with a closed face (to increase the effective loft), I changed my D2 for today's round to the lowest loft setting and the most closed too. It's still hard to tell how it is for distance because of the conditions, but I hit it quite nicely. 8 out of 13 found the short stuff which is about twice as many as normal!

Not a fan of the shape and looks behind the ball although the X-hot pro irons are a different ball game altogther and look very nice and hittable. I've said before though looks aren't everything and if it produces good numbers on the monitors and the best for game then I'd by the driver. Loads to try though. I like the Cally fitting centre at their HQ in Chessington so would go there for a fit if I went that route.

I've just spent half an hour typing all the figures into a spreadsheet (I know!) to try and make a bit more sense of the differences between clubs, and thought it might be interesting for the more technically minded people on here.

My conclusion is that the results are mostly dependant on the swing I put on it, but I'd welcome any other opinions.
The club number is the order I hit them in, so in theory I could have been cold at the start and knackered at the end!
