Callaway 2012 drivers

I thought the 2010/11 Callaway drivers were so uninspiring. I had the chance to try them all just after they came out with a radar and a fitter. At the time my drive was all I could ever ask it to be, long and straight so felt like a good benchmark.

I found them really unfeeling and high launching. The fitter complemented me on my booming drives but could not get the ball flight down with any head so we moved onto shafts, after exhasting all the stock shafts he fitted a Mitsubishi Kai'li. Winner! "there you go" he said "Callaways low launch head with a mid kick shaft, what a great combo". It was all about the shaft for me. The heads all felt hard so that with an adjustable head is not exiting but I am sure it will give it a go anyhow :D

£450 he wanted :o

Never been a Cally fan - their Irons are too big hand clumpy - and their drivers are a bit too I dont know - perhaps - middling (??) for me.

These look ok - but as mentioned they know how to charge so add a bit of carbon fibre and the Callaway logo and bye to half a months wages? Would be hard to out sell the R11, so why did they even go along the same route?

They have to go adjustable because the rules on club design constrain the manufactures to the point where they really have got as far as they are going to with forgiveness and springiness and all that jazz. The gains in the performance in the future will be in fitting and custom fitting. Or so I have read in a very deep and full on article.

I think basically with Nike, tm and titleist having adjustable gear they had to join in for marketing and sales. As said there is also little room left for technology growth. It's all about the money and didn't want to get left behind I suppose!

Reading up on this and Cally may be on to something here. Adjustable technology adds weight to the club where it's not needed. If your R11/910 etc are titanium construction then this added weight has to be shaved from somewhere else to keep the driver within a respectable overall weight. Only 20-30 grammes but in driver-talk that's about 3 tonnes!
Callaway are using their Forged Composite stuff - extremely light - in their clubheads. This means they can save the weight that the adjustable hosel takes up and still put weighting where it matters to make the club more forgiving.

So they could end up being as adjustable as the R11/910 etc but as forgiving as the G20 etc.........

Could be interesting.

Yep, one thing I will commend Callaway for is there use of interesting materials.
