I pulled a sickie from work yesterday having spent the whole weekend at accountancy college and decided i'd go and have a round, having not played since playing Forest of Arden at the end of August.

The easiest course to get to from my house is Mitcham and i've played it a few times this year. It's a decent enough course if a little short and not very tight at all, perfect confidence boosting track in my opinion.

Anyway, I paid my £12 which is an absolute bargain for London midweek. It's a bit more expensive as the week goes on but well worth it.

I set out playing on my own but joined up with another chap after about 3 holes. I was 1 over and hitting it utter horse muck, a load of snap hooks and the like. I didn't really want to but it was rammed out there and would only be waiting even longer.

I then birdied 4th to get back to even, 3 putted the 5th from 10 foot for bogey. Snap hooked my tee shot on the 6th but as it's a dog leg to the left I ended up near the green and made birdie, finally managed to muller a drive up the 7th again just short of the green but there's trees surrounding it and my route to the pin was blocked so had to make do with a par.

I went out in level par 34. I've done that probably a fair few times over the years off the yellows but only when i'd played unbelievable golf for my standards and certainly not when hitting it like a helmet.

Back 9 was astounding. I finally started to hit some proper golf shots and only missed 1 green, of which I chipped up to about 3 inches away. I made 1 more birdie and didn't drop a shot. I missed a good 3 putts for birdie that really I should have made or at least brushed the hole.

Anyway it led to coming home in 34 and shooting 68, one under par.

I couldn't believe it and the bloke I played with was speechless as i'd told him I only play twice a month at most and am only playing to about 9-10 these days.

I'm not getting ahead of myself as it's one round of golf at a place that's very forgiving and often no more than a wedge/9 iron in to greens if that but it's got me desperate for the decent weather to stick around.

My goal was to join a club this year down here but I haven't managed to, due to not having enough time to get my moneys worth. A few more flukes like yesterday though and i'm bloody well joining, I don't care.

Anyone else shot one out of the blue like that and toyed with you? I'm under no illusions it was only a knockabout and is a different ball game when it matters but it's almost as if the golfing gods have thrown this out there for me to properly hook me again after several years in and out of the game.

Haha and i'd proceed to shoot about 85!

I played in a works event a few months back which was the first serious game i've had in about 8 years, I inexplicably came over all nervous and had a shocker. At least i'll be able to play off about 20 next year and might clear up on the prizes should I do alright :)

Good shooting. I know Mitcham very well and the section over the railway line in particular are good birdie chances and so I can see how you could make that score even if you think you aren't swinging great. The back nine is a bit more fiddly and so that is very good scoring. I'd be looking to play as often as I could having scored that well
