I have just read that DC is looking into not putting the clocks back in the winter. Obviously for us southerners, that means more day light after work, and a longer golfing season. The counter arguement is that Scottish kids will be going to school in the dark.

I have never understood why this is an issue, since kids in the south will go home in the dark. What's the difference?

Obviously from a selfish point of view, extending my golfing hours is good. I can't play earlier in the day, as I am at work, so just getting up earlier doesn't make sense. My company won't change their hours.

Any views?

Sounds good to me, after a month or so its dark in the evenings and the mornings so whats the difference, lets leave as much light in the evenings as possble

I have long been an advocate of not only this but going the full hog and moving to Central European Time. As you point out the main drawbacks are in the winter when it wouldn't be light until mid morning in the far north but at around 9 to 9:30 for most of us but with the benefit of an hour's light later in the day. As not many of us get up in the light I don't see why this is a problem, most of us go to work in the dark anyway in winter and it can do what it likes while I'm there.

IMO though the benefits in the summer so much outweigh this it's a no brainer. Currently, through the main summer months we generally have light between 4/5am and 6 am when 95% of the population are sleeping. By changing the time an extra hour forward in summer, an hour of that (in my view wasted) light would be added to the evening allowing all sorts of additional leisure time, less energy use, safter streets etc.

I don't think the argument is about winter which is rubbish no matter how you cut it. It's about the massive benefits in summer. For example, with the extra hour today it would be coming light at around 7am and going dark at around 10pm.

Write to your MP now !!

I think it was tried some time in the 70's.

Statistically there are more road accidents involving children in the dark evenings. (Tend to loiter on way home, drivers tired after days work Etc) so it would appear to make sense.

Outside workers complained, farming and construction especially, as it was not light until 9-9.30 and their output fell as well as accident rates increasing. Think this is why it was never adopted.

Move it forward two hours and make the Jocks eat more carrots. You don't hear them moaning 'cos it's light until 11.00pm up there do you?
If I lived up there and carried out a lot of "nocturnal activities" nobody would listen to me moaning.
Give us more light.

I have never understood the agricultural argument. I thought farmers ignored the clock anyway, and just got up when it got light.

sounds good to me but is gonna get HID back up. the other week she was having a winge about me playing once at weekend and once during the week, my reply was " but come end of spetember twilight golf is over so ill be playing once a week "

if she hears about this she is gonna flip!!!

The 'Jocks' want to be different with many things.

Why not England go with CET time and when you get North of Carlisle change your clocks. They are usually 1 hour behind us in any event!!!

Typical from the English is there anything else you want to steal from us Jocks you stole our oil now our light pphhh, get it up ya's :) :). Oh and its great golfing up here in the summer at 10.30 at night when the suns starting to go down.

David Cameron is just bandying (others') ideas about to see what reaction they get - he agrees with Manchester city council bringing in minimum alcohol pricing, but doesn't want to introduce it nationwide. Mixed ideology behind his very sketchy first draft of policies.

Been tried before and failed, if DC brought it in, the Tories will get even less votes in Scotland, but I suppose a percentage of zero is still zero...

They could do it south of the border if they wanted, but if it was UK wide, it's pretty unfair on those in the very far north. Still be dark gone 10am in parts.

Winter is pretty bloody bleak throughout the UK, I don't think this is going to improve it at all, and will certainly be detrimental to those in the far north.

If by being different, it means I'm nothing like you, then yes please.Dick.

It must be worth giving it a trial for a year and seeing the effect it has on the country as a whole. I'm in Yorkshire so am in the middle of this Kent/Scots debate, it won't effect me as much.

Anyone know what happens in countries like Chile where one end of the country is a zillion miles away from the other?

Personally, I think we should forget about moving clocks around and just get on with it.
