Breaking 100

Isn't there normally someone comes on right about now to say "ha, I never realised breaking 100 was an achievement because I've always just been awesome"?

Great effort with the score. I remember my first sub100 round. Keep it going, and hope life settles down for you. You'll be threatening 90 before you know it.

I'm assuming the majority of the golfing community are nice decent people who understand how tough this game is.

Thanks, felt good. :)

Most CSS I've seem average 2 less par in average scoring conditions unless we are going to bring course difficulty into play as another variable.

Without knowing the course and what CSS normally sits at it is difficult for anyone to second guess what it would be. My old place the CSS was normally at or -1, even in good conditions, it was not unusual to see it go above par either as soon as the wind picked up.

Yeah, I'm struggling to see how anyone can guess it, or have a 'rule of thumb'. Our place is Par 69, SSS 70, and in 4 years of membership, I have never seen CSS less than 70, even in the middle of summer without a breath of wind.

Well done mate, cracking achievement! I broke 100 for the first time last July and within a few months shot an 86! So improvements can come quickly!

Congrats on breaking the 100 barrier and setting a PB

With h/cap adjustments in stableford points its not just straight forward total numbers issue but just keep playing enjoying and it will fall over time. Let your h/cap tracker worry about adjustments etc and certainly don't worry about CSS until you join a club and start playing comps.

Same as this - ours par 69, SSS 70, never seen CSS at less than 70

Wish I could!!! Broke 100 once so far but can't flaming do it again, had a few 100's but end up messing up on at least 2 or 3 holes.

Last week played Bingley St Ives for the 1st time, went round the front 9 in 47 playing really well and then had a 6 on the par 3 10th, then an 8 and then a 9 and then an 8 on the 16th to shoot 105.

Par 71"
SSS 68,
But what's CSS.... This is what hc are worked from, not SSS

The CONGU site taking an age to load so...

How do you know the CSS when there is no 'C' ?

When there's no comp on and a player is still submitting a card whats used then? (I'm assuming the SSS)

CSS is only applicable on competition days all other times SSS is used. the idea being to try and even out course difficult on any given day ie howling gale and rain the option is if the field results dictate the CSS will be higher or lower than SSS.

Thanks, Suppose next target will be to do it again, and then try and beat par with my net score. I shot 2 over with the net score and I definitely messed up a few shots.

Good thing in my mind was that I was aiming for par. In my head when I was within pitching distance I was thinking about getting it in a position to make par, and was annoyed with myself when I shot bogies.

Thanks, yeah figured as much but couldn't follow why CSS was asked for on page 1

Its because the majority of golfers (on here) only think of HC in terms of club competition and therefore presumed you were in a comp and that would indeed be effected by the CSS.

I estimated my own HC for years up until joining a club and playing medals...mmmmmmm

Different ball game.... I have got down to unofficial 18 playing stablefords and society golf but my first two medal comps have been 102 gross net 79. The second one being a qualifier resulting in 0.1 increase. to 23....

I foolishly thought I would be shooting low 90's and having reductions every week.....

Anyway back at it on Thursday in the first midweek medal... ...

At your (and my) level I would not beat yourself up about shooting a bogie. Yes I suppose you could say it could have been better, but then again I expect every golfer from Tiger to a first timer can say the same.

Enjoy it, make sure it is fun and I am sure the scores will come down if you practice enough. A pro I had a lesson told me that around 80% of golfers struggle to break 100 (there is a chance he was pitying me though), it's just that the majority of people on this board are freaks well in the 20% bracket. Also looks like you have invested in a very decent bag of clubs so you can't use them as an excuse ;)

Well exactly.

I want to be a very good amateur golfer. I'm not merely interested in accepting mediocrity. Obviously shooting for pro level isn't going to realistically happen, but if there is an opportunity to better myself by making par, getting lower scores, then for me that is the motivation.

I'll definitely enjoy breaking par more then hitting a bogie. :)

Yeah my clubs seem to making a big difference, not only in confidence but in ball strike too.
