It will come, just keep plugging away and it will happen.

I would possibly suggest going for a few sessions on a par-3 course or the like as you really can literally slash shots off with an improved game 100yds in.

good luck with it and keep on enjoying your golf.

When I first started playing and was desperate to break the 100 mark, I made it a point that whenever I was in trouble on the course, no matter what my head told me I could do (and I invariably couldn't) I made the 150 yard markers my friend!
I was always fairly reasonable with my 7 iron, and as long as I got to the 150 yard marker (or thereabouts) I knew that I stood a good chance of getting home with it from there.
Of course, this will only work on tracks with 150 yard markers!!
Little thoughts like this helped me around, and instilled a little dicipline into my game.
I still love 150 markers!!

Hapless, I thought you was a 26 handicap? how did that happen if you haven't broken 100?

Good luck with it, it will come. My aim is to start breaking 100 on courses i haven't played before rather than gettin intimidated and falling to pieces (crowborough beacon).

Like i just posted to homer, i really wouldn't get bogged down in all the stats. if you're two feet off the fairway but not in the thick stuff this makes your stats look bad however if he's sitting up ready for a nice crisp 8 iron which you then land near or on the green who cares about hitting the fairway?

Hapless, in case you didn't notice, I don't do fairways and greens, so that isn't that important at this stage, it is chipping and putting that will make or break your score, combined with keeping the ball in play.

The short game and putting will help your score but also, if you are having to regularly play 3 off the tee or playing out of deep jungle the triple bogies etc will mount. It is trying to find the combination of keeping it play and maybe getting onto the green in 3 or 4 and making 2 putts.

If you treat every hole as a par 5 then you would go round in 90. The fact that you can make shots up on par 3's and that there are 9 extra shots to play with (90 + 9 to break 100) then use them and take your medicine when in trouble even if that means a SW 20 yards back onto the fairway

I'm a 25 now, but was initially given a handicap of 24 by the club after handing 3 cards in. I hope never to reach 26!

Does seem slightly harsh though, the 24.

Keeping the ball in play was the task last week. The stats thing is a post game analysis, not during, as explained in an earlier post on here.

Agree about the fairway thing though. Really not that important if the ball is playable.

How bad did you do at Crowborough on the back nine then Minty?

Minty - Bear in mind you can have a h/cap of less than 28 on par 72, never having broken 100 gross, as for h/cap purposes any thing more than a double is counted as a double. So 10s on a hole don't count that badly for h/cap, but stop you shooting under 100.

Murph, Hapless,

My apologies, I still struggle to get my head round this handicap calculation.

Hapless, think i shot 56 or 58 on the back nine mate, swung the club like a hillbilly and putted like a "spaz" to use tigers terminology. I reckon i 3 putted more than 10 times. 3 of the par 3's i was either on the green or the fringe of the green after my first shot but walked off with one 4 and two 5's.

Was real bad golf from me. Strange cause i played 9 holes on saturday and shot 44 over my course. If i'm honest crowborough was right out of my comfort zone..... dont think i'm mentally tuff enough for a course like that yet.
