Breakdown recovery

Just wondering if anyone has any good or bad reviews on companies offering breakdown recovery. I'm gonna get the wife some cover as the car has just gone out of warranty plus she couldn't change a wheel if she tried.

There are the obvious candidates like AA and RAC but does anyone else measure up

At different times in the last 30-odd yrs I've been with AA, Green Flag & the RAC. Called the AA a few times and never been let down. Called the RAC a couple of times... rejoined the AA. Never had need of Green Flag when I was a member, although Mrs Hobbit needed them and they were fine.

Can't offer an opinion on AA or RAC, but I've been with Green Flag for a few years, and only had to use them once in that time.
They don't have as many patrols than the big 2, and use a lot of local contractors for coverage.

The one time I had to use them, they delivered everything they promised when they attended.. I had a contractor out of Edinburgh and he was brilliant.

Personally I would not touch the AA with a very long barge pole.

I have been with the RAC for about 30 years and always had good service. I had a problem on the Applecross peninsula [very isolated] once and they were there within 30 minutes and fixed it.

AA for me is the best, closely followed by RAC, I wouldn't touch Green Flag, I am in the trade at a Dealership and see them all, AA and RAC very rarely use third parties to do work for them, where as GF use them all the time, some of them are better than others but most don't reach the quality of an AA or RAC patrol.

It's a bit like insurance, you never really know what the service is like until you need to use them. I've been with the RAC since 1979 and used them a couple of times when I was young and drove old bangers. Since then i never needed them until a few years ago when I was in France at Le Mans with my classic car. I had fuel pump issues and because of the racing and the number of old cars, the RAC had based a couple of old car specialists out there for the week. For everyday motoring, changing wheels, flat battery, sorting you out when you have put the wrong fuel in the car etc, then any of the major companies would be fine, but anything more, then I would suggest the AA or RAC are better.

the AA dropped my two year old van off their truck on the kingston bridge and cracked the sump. idiots. it cost £1000 to fix (vw payed it) but not once did someone say sorry to me. muppets

I get Green Flag cover free as a perk of my bank account but thankfully haven't had need of their services yet. Used to be with the RAC, had to use them once and found them ok.

i did use i think First Call, very cheap something like £30 a year. car broke down and a local garage came out and towed me to my garage. excellent service
