Decided to kit myself up out with a new set of Vokeys 52*,56* and 60* but I arnt sure what bounce to go with. I am a divot taker and sometimes strugle with bare lies (thinning) with my current SW but have no idea what bounce it is (cheap wilson box set) but it seems quite high. I dont want to be stuck without a decent wedge out of the sand but dont want to be stuck with a club I can only use from the sand. Any suggestions?

That sounds like a contradiction to me :D

I take huge divots and have 52, 56, and 60 vokeys (although the 60 isn't in my bag at the moment).

I think my bounces angles were described as medium by the guy that did the fitting.

From memory, 52 is 8, 56 is 10, 60 is 4.
Each club is mainly for doing a specific thing in my case, and has bounce angles to suit, like the most being on the SW to stop the club digging into the sand, and the least on the LW, for getting under the ball off a tight lie around the green even with a wide open face.

It also depends on the conditions you face most. Tight bare lies, lush thick grass, or a mixture.

It sounds like youve got too much bounce on your wedge at the moment which is causing the thinning, you need a low bounce for tight lies and more bounce for fluffy lies.depending on what shot you require from sand all your wedges will get the ball out,i find more bounce get me more distance.Of course im not a pro,so maybe ask your pro and he will fit you accordingly.

I’ve go 51 with no bounce, 56 with 11 deg of bounce.

Use the 51 for tight lies and 56 for bunkers and fluffier lies.

I Play at a links course with deep pot bunkers a lot of the time so need the bounce for these.

I have two vokey wedges 52 and 58 both with 8 degree bounce. My course has tight firm fairways, and they are perfect for off the fairway as well as out of bunkers. (Best of both worlds)

No bounce? that must be like slicing tomatoes :D
I have used 4 degree wedges before and when you hit then properly they are fantastic, catch a little dirt first and you nearly tunnel below the ball.

I've got a Vokey 60 04 and I only use that for lobs shots really, open the stance, open the face nice and flat, full swing, lift my head, skin the ball 100 yards across the green!

I do use it out of wet bunkers where the sand is really compacted as well, works well, provided your timing is spot on.

I found this on the link

"For example, lob wedges (60-64 degree) which throw the ball very high for soft-landing ‘pop-up’ shots around the green (Phil Mickelson’s speciality) tend to have low bounce because even the smallest error can make the club ‘bounce’ off the ground and cause a ‘thinned’ shot. You know the sort well – instead of gently throwing the ball 10 feet in the air and plopping it by the pin – it travels at warp speed a few inches above the ground, lodging deep into thick bushes 50 yards behind the green.

Made me laugh.

I have a 10 degree bounce on my sand. You've got to have some decent bounce unless your technique stops you burrowing to Australia.

I had a go with a 4 degree bounce SW and practiced my normal bunker technique (where I draw a line in the sand and place down a dozen balls just to the left of it) and NOT one came out. With Gaps or Lobs find what works for you. For a proper SW, get some bounce.

My 58 has 8 degrees and to be fair its fairly good out of all types of sand. I had been dropping my 3 wood and using a 56 and 60 degree wedge (plus the 52) combination but the LW has been very poor this summer and cost me more shots than its saved and to be fair I feel more confident in terms of knowing my yardages and having less options
