Boring

Or perhaps because we want to watch golfers play stunning shots in gorgeous sunshine on lush green courses and especially this morning they look like a bunch of windswept club golfers in a winter medal

Maybe, but if you want target golf, the US tour is on sky. I think it's fascinating to watch the top pros playing outside of their comfort zone.

I know its tradition to hold the open on a links course, but is it not about time they thought about using a inland course, what about Woburn, Wentworth, Gleneagles, or even Blairgowrie.

  was your mouth out with soap!! :D :D

I think it's great - links golf takes the players out of their comfort zone and presents them with a different challenge each day. It's not for everyone, but I love links golf and would happily play it every day if I could.

+1

Let's get shock collars fitted to the commentators and electrocute the buggers when they get boring.

And just taser Alliss every couple of minutes.

Watch a lot of it this afternoon but its the poor commentary that really puts me off and rubbish on course analysis. I can put up with the dodgy camera work in todays conditions as tracking a ball in that gloom and wind can't have been easy. Cotta, James, Nantz and Grady just bore the pants off me. None has any commentationg nous or able to paint a picture and the silence between each inane comment was the highlight.

Don't get me wrong I'm enjoying itjust trying to highlight why some people are not. Come on Dazza!!!!!!

It's an interesting thread.

The course is something else....I mean, look at it, 18 wonderful holes, most on their own (unlike the side-by-side of some) and undoubtedly a great test. However, I can't actually remember a single one.....I just don't seem to be getting the vibe of it all.

I totally disagree with all the negative comments.

Brilliant course and I am finding the Open to be very interesting this year, same as most other years. It is fantastic compared to last years procession on a course with no rough!

My view may be clouded by the fact that I have been there and know the holes etc.

Murph is absolutely right - far from flat. For example, the 6th where Tom Watson got his ace is uphill and surrounded by huge dunes...

Maybe we need 3-D HD TV although one low level camera shot I saw gave an inkling of the bumps and hollows which don't normally show.

Phew!!! thanks.. :D i thought it was just me .. was away at a wedding thur & fri .. was so looking forward to vegging all day with the tv .. got bored & went to the range .. i just dont get the appeal of links golf .. never have.. so i thought maybe it was just that ..hopefuly be better tomorrow late on ..

It doesn't bother me that I don't recognise the holes. My knowledge of golf courses is rubbish anyway. I couldn't recognise any of the holes at St. Andrews except 1, 17 & 18 but it doesn't stop me enjoying the coverage.

Same with the commentators, I don't really care what they're saying. I can see what's going on, I like the anecdotes and silly comments.

2 from earlier that stick in my mind. The female on-course commentator (Maureen?) said she couldn't see any break in a putt. The guy hit it 6" outside left and it still missed on the right. Do they feel they have to say something even if they haven't got a clue?
I did have a chuckle to myself though when one of them (Mark James?) said that someone had started off with 5 straight bogeys then he fell apart.

The weather?
Watching Tom Watson and Rickie Fowler shoot 72 and 68 respectively (in the worst of the weather for the most part) is the most I've enjoyed watching anyone play in quite a while. I'd much rather watch them fighting for what is comparatively a great score in awful conditions than shooting the lights out on a glorious summers day.

+1 especially regarding Messrs Watson & Fowler

Why would they need to 'paint a picture' on TV though? We can see what's going on for ourselves.

Look at any of the great commentators from way back when the beeb had the best like Arlott or Laker in the cricket. Not only would they describe the action but set a scene and their delivery was more compelling. Allis still does it

I think it's the course.
Flat, featureless and boring

Errr, sorry? I'm strongly guessing you've never played it!? Fairways are anything but flat, the greens are anything but flat! I'll give you featureless if you mean no trees or bushes.

RSG is not really any different to Carnoustie, Birkdale or St Andrews. It's a blooming difficult course that gets better the more you play it.

But...I do agree the coverage makes it look dull...

Went round Muirfield the other week and if they have all these high cameras in 2013 it will look flat as well.

They had a few green level cameras at Castle Stuart, it gave a much better impression of what it's like. Thats whats needed. These silly graphics that try to show the way the green runs are totally useless. From the high camera we hear the comentator telling the ball to get up the slope, yet we cant see it. If the action cut to a more green level camera when the ball landed we would get much more feel for the game.

Whilst I can appreciate that RSG is a difficult and interesting course to play, its TV appeal is woeful, as with most links courses. The weather, like F1, just takes the players out of the usual 25 degrees and dry, warm conditions they're used to. Which is no bad thing.

Yes, it's disappointing that Luke and Lee particularly aren't playing this weekend, and that I'm sure has lost quite a few viewers. But for the commentators not to know who they commenting on, and on which hole, is ludicrous. I've lost count how many times I nodded off today watching it.

It might be a great course and a great test of golf. But by god it's not holding my attention.

Flat, featureless and boring

Agreed, the course may be undulating in real life but looks flat and uninteresting on TV. Does not help that there are no stunning views, famous holes or reknowned landmarks

except the 14th is it, the Himalaya bunker hole, except that they moved the tee and the pin to take it out of play - the one unique course feature and no-one's been near it.

they were arguing about this on radio 5, one view was that 'if they hadn't moved the tee/pin none of them would be able to to make the green in two'; the other was 'they are the top professionals for g's sake, and are protected from the challenges that club golfers face every day of the week'

Found today's play absolutely fascinating. You had the early starters going into some pretty dire conditions then as the weather eased birdies from the leaders showed that if you'd played the better golf over the first 2 rounds you could take advantage and consolidate or strengthen your position.

Darren hit some stellar irons and hopefully tomorrow wont rue those missed putts.

If you don't like the commentary turn it down, simple as !!
