was thinking the exact same. stood there for a while watching and its an easy hit for these guys.
It really doesn't matter what the par is, the winner is still the person with the lowest 72 hole total. Does it really matter if Willett wins with - 18 or - 14?

That comes down to the whole concept of par. Why have it at all in a strokeplay competition? Just add up the numbers.

The argument regarding -18 or -14 is that people judge how difficult the course is based on the below par score. If +2 wins, it is set up too hard. If -27 wins it is not a test. The public want to see birdies and eagles, they get a cheer, but if everyone gets them then the novelty is not there.

I guess it comes down to this is how golf scores itself.

That comes down to the whole concept of par. Why have it at all in a strokeplay competition? Just add up the numbers.
The only requirement for a par figure is so that players can see at any time how they are doing in comparison to the rest of the field.
