Big Prize/Trophy or Big Handicap Cut?

Winning a prize for me as long as its something decent & my name is inscribed on some sort of trophy
I'm a bit materialistic :D

The handicap will take care of itself.

I agree with most of you, I am in the handicap side. Don't get me wrong I like to challenge and "try to win" but the handicap cut feels better than voucher. I have hit my HC aim for this year, but my overall aim for the next two years is to get down to single figures. I hit that and that will be the biggest win for me.

Winning for me. I remember my wins, but couldn't care less about my handicap after all these years. I suppose some people like to brag about how low they are. I would rather play well and not get a handicap cut, than hack it round chip and putt everything and get a cut.

Doesn't this go hand in hand, surely winning a major comp will also achieve your aim of lowering your handicap.

I think this point depends on the handicap. The if i got out (off of 5) and shoot 38pts for example, i am over the moon that i will get cut probably 0.2. However, The chances of me winning the comp with that are very small.

whereas someone of say 16 (your handicap) in my opinion is more likely to shoot a great round such as 8 over (44points), win the competition and get cut 2.4shots.

interesting debate though.

For me it is about winning... as long as I know it is a fair field then I want to win...
Handicap cuts take care of themselves... we all surely play a sport to win? Or are some of the people like the new schooling systems where it's the 'taking part' that counts....?

Don't get me wrong, I love playing golf, but I always want to win - whether that is a club comp or social games...

Winning for me is all about my handicap, i would say that having a lower handicap than someone else means that you have been winning against them for a long period of time.

I will actually admit i struggle to focus at times if i know my handicap has no relevance.

I used to think handicap cut, until I got a 0.8 cut last year and finished 8th in the competition.

That irked me a little, so I guess I like to win

It has to be to win! Surely?

I play all sports to win. Whilst I cant influence others who play, I can try to do the best myself and if that is enough to win then great! I would probably get a cut along the way for doing that, which means im moving in the right direction, but I make no bones about it, I want to win, simple as that.

Sure I want to come down, but I would rather win the event I'm in and get cut for that, rather than get cut and not win!!?

Everyone is different and thats great. I'm competitive in all sports I play, so want to win.

Obviously in an ideal world it would be both, but the lower you get (or so I've found) the less frequent the trophies become, but I've always judged the quality of my golf by the number by my name on the handicap print-out!

Yes wins are important and I'm always playing to win but I'd take a season with a 2 shot cut and no trophies over 2 trophies and no cut.

There's a reason it isn't easy...
Our biggest handicap board competition had 148 entries. Is that why it is so difficult to win ?

Oh and it was won by a scratch golfer, who has also won at least two other handicap competitions this year. Seems to me it is too easy for low handicaps to use handicaps as an excuse for not winning. The majority of our big competitions are won by low handicaps. The course is set up to play as hard a possible. When we had a forum meet the day after one such competition, Region3 was the only player out of over forty to get 36 points. Didn't hear any of the high handicappers complaining though.:mmm:

Im in need of a big cut so a win would take care of both, but a 2 shot cut and no win I'd take all day. There are a few lowest gross comps at our place that obviously I have no chance of winning and only a select few do.

I've won plenty of comps during the last 2 years at my club, its not that hard for the lower handicappers to win. Just seems that the higher handicapper wins are the ones that get remembered more (mainly by people in the lower handicapper categories).

This is so true, i am guilty of this. When we win, its because we are good golfers and have been playign well 'lately'. When a high hadicapper wins its becuase their handicap is a joke and they are effectively cheating.

Such double standards, but i am guilty as charged!
