i'm kind of new to going into a bookies and putting some of my cash down but i like the thought of having a wee wager on the masters...

how does each way betting work for golf?

i have a wee shortlist of players that i think have a chance, but i am pretty sure that one or two of them will come in the top 4 or 5... what kind of bet do i put on.

Sorry if this is totally straightforward, but i've never been a betting man before (apart from a works day at the horses a few years back!)

Betting on golf e/w works like this.If you put £5 e/w on a 12/1 shot, firstly the bet would cost you ten pounds as it is doubled if you go e/w,secondly most betting shops go first five.If your player wins you will win £60 plus your stake back.If your player comes in the top five you will get a place, the bookie will pay out a percentage per place. My suggestion is dont bet on Tiger e/w you have to do him to win as his price is too short, wait until after the first round if he has a bad round his price will be bigger.

If you're think of betting on players other than Tiger Woods then check out the specials at Ladbrokes and Boylesports - both will pay the 2nd placed player as the winner if Woods wins the Masters.

To answer your question on Each Way, you effectively put 2 bets on: 1 for the win, 1 for the place (typically 5 places with golf). Typically you get paid 1/4 of the odds for a place. To illustrate:

You put £10 EW on a player at 100/1. That's £10 to win and £10 to place 1-5, total stake £20. If he wins you get £1270 back (100x10 plus your stake, plus 25x10 plus your stake); if he comes 2nd-5th then you get £260 back (you lose your £10 win, but get 1/4 the odds 25x£10 plus your £10 place stake). if he shares 5th spot with other players then there's a pro-rata reduction.

Hope that helps!

If you decided to do it online, with Betfair you can bet on top 5, top 10 or top 20 without having to have the win part of the e/w bet as well, if you fancied someone to do well but not win it.

I have no idea how much he's been playing or how well, but I got Tiger to have 3 or less bogeys in the first round at just less than evens which I thought was a decent price if he's bothered about competing.

You can also get 6/4 on his scoring less than 72 for the first round. Still fav for the event though at less than half the odds of anyone else. Currently 5.8/1 on BF.
