my pal and i was in a bb stableford today and played along side two strangers. like us one was a big hitter and the other wasn't. when this happened....... on the par 5's they would both tee off, the shorter hitter would play his second shot, then before the long hitter hit his second shot he said ''go and hit your 3rd shot. if you hit the green then i'm going to try and hit the green in two for a eagle oportunity. if you miss then i'll lay up''. is that ok? i like the idea of this

yup, no problems. Once it is the team's turn to go, they can elect to play either ball

can work well on the greens too ie. hole out the steady score if it's your turn
To play and let the birdie putt be hit with no pressure.
It's the teams turn not the individual in Pairs comps.

I won a board comp 4BBB at the weekend doing exactly the same thing you mentioned. We shot a net 65 doing the whole, "if you put it in play I'll go for the green". Worked to perfection, I drove both our short par 4's after he put his ball safely into play.

The only problem might relate to 6-7 Undue delay

We often play "out of turn" around the green, but can't think that we've ever done what the OP describes mainly cos of the to and fro-ing.
I played in a Better ball open last week with a shortish dog leg par 5 where I managed to cut the corner nicely. My partner laid up her second shot perfectly about 90 yards short of the green (which had a stream just in front of it). Since she had an easy pitch onto the green, i decided to risk going for green in two and managed to bounce before and over the stream. Then she plonked her 3rd in the water!
