Best Irons for £200?

They would want you to have standard as that's what's in their stock room! Doesn't mean they may be right. I fell into this trap with American golf! I actually needed 1.5 upright. I would also look at ping g series. Superb irons especially for a starter. Wish I had done it at the start.

We went for a fitting yesterday and all we really achieved was that we need new clubs and that based on our high (5ft7 and 5ft8) any standard club would be fine.... This was at direct golf

if all they based it on was your height then I'd ignore it completely. If you are serious then go and get a proper dynamic fitting with a pro, probably worth paying for it, Foxholer gave some really good advice.

Indeed, the Direct Golf factor was highly predictable.

It's quite likely that standard length irons WILL fit, but height shouldn't be the only consideration! And as Glynn states, there could still be other amendments needed - hitting off a lie-board would indicate whether the standard lie is right for you - and it;s amazing what a difference that small adjustment can make. If you do order from DG, then check that the specs of the set you purchase are actually what you ordered - and re-check the lie angle is right for you again on a lie-board. It's not that they are pulling a 'fast one', just that quite a high percentage of 'sets' of clubs have 1 or 2 that are out of whack with the rest! The difference between a 'mixed' set and one that matches is really amazing, as I found with some Mizunos - the club I 'couldn't hit' suddenly became my favourite one!

I was in the same situation a few months back and picked up a set of callaway RAZR x tour irons 4-sw r300 shaft. Get on with them like a house on fire £130 quid. Picked up a g15 driver £35. Plenty of bargains to be had out there, I'd have a good look around see what appeals to you narrow it down and go and try before you buy. But if your buying 2nd hand make sure they are not custom fit to someone else. As that can cause all sorts of problems with your game. Be sure to let us know what you end up getting!

Welcome alone. Id' use something like Golfbidder as a reference point as they have a huge range of makes and models to give you some ball park numbers. It isn't the cheapest site so I wouldn't necessarily recommend buying off them but if you find something you like you can source it somewhere else online

Sod the fitting........unless you swing ultra fast (or slow) just buy a standard set of clubs you like the look of and go out and hit the ball. Why over complicate things at this stage????
You've only been "playing" for 2 months, so I expect your swing changes from shot to shot, let alone day to day.
Buy a set that you feel confident with and see how you get on. You might not like it after 6 months and decide to sell up. A standard set will be easier to get shot of.
Leave the fitting until you feel that you can repeat your swing day in, day out. Even after 30 years of playing, I still can't do that.

As someone about to commit to the game, it's likely that your actual swing will change - with lessons or simply with practice/experience, but neither your swing speed nor your own physical attributes are likely to change significantly.

I'm afraid I dont agree.

I'd like to think I could significantly change someone's swing speed and alter their address position and posture if needed.
If you are 5'7/8 and dont have longer than average arms/legs then a standard set set-up would suit you just fine.
Any pro would be able to 'custom fit' you up to a point by eye and if the guy at direct golf was a pro and said standard would be fine, then I'd take his advice.
If he was a spotty youth who couldnt break 90, then I'd seek further advice.

Adams xtd all day

I own the forged version and I am loving them.

Real top top top quality sticks.

In fact I'm a real Adams convert currently.

The c taper shafts might not suit everyone though. Saying that, I'm not sure the are fitted in the normal XTD?

Great brand though imo.

Clearly don't know much about golf clubs then mate

Firstly, I'm not your mate!

Secondly if you had qualified your statement with "in my opinion" I could have accepted that.

Thirdly I know a great deal about golf equipment. I know that Cooper, Miura, KZG & Mizuno all looked nicer and all performed much better in my hands. Therefore having tried and tested Orka I'm in a position to say they're performance and feel was harsh and not a patch on Cooper.

Ha ha

Cheers Mr Wishon

Aye right.

Tried them on a wedge fitting. Bottom of the pile in terms of feel and performance. Not a patch on my Cooper wedges.

H'mm! While I believe MendieGK's comment was rather 'out of order', there seems to be some (if not considerable) fault in your comment too!... So after trying 1 (or was it more?) style of Orka WEDGES, you write off the GI irons because THE WEDGES (which might have been Cast) didn't feel as soft as the (super-high cost) forged offerings from those other suppliers! While they may indeed have felt inferior to them, you were comparing apples with onions!!

The clubs MendieGK linked to do appear reasonably appropriate - though not the most forgiving of Orka's range (and perhaps still a little too highly priced?).

Oh and btw. Just to assure you of my credentials...I've hit (forged) wedges from both Orka and all the others but Cooper - though plenty of others from the same base supplier (who's own brand is Vega). The Orcas felt pretty much as good as Vegas or Mizunos, both of whose brands I've owned wedges and iron sets, and rather more my preferred feel - in wedges - than that of KZG (only hit a few, but was comparing them to Miuras) and Miura of which I've owned a dozen or more wedges and both their Tournament Blades and CB201s.

And just remember that this thread is about iron sets for a relative newbie with a budget of about £200. Only used KZGs would be likely to be in that ball park, with the others probably double or more that price for used irons and a frightening amount more if new!

OK Mr F holer.

Wedges were my last fitting, the Orka's just did not commute at all. The feel was harsh and the look was cheap, the leading edge just didn't sit flush and basically they just inspired zero confidence.

I tried Orka RS something when I was fitted for my irons. Look lovely, didn't feel anything special and not as forgiving as other models. A quick bit of research on ebay proves I was justified in avoiding these as the resale value is probably about the same price as scrap value. That may sound "snobish" and it is however I usually change my irons every two years as I get bored and like to change.

Wedge wise they were harsh and not for me. The Orka RS while looking stunning didn't really excite me and were not as forgiving as others, the performance compared to the Mizuno JPX Forged that i settled on last year was night and day. Horses for courses I guess. Sweeping statements are there to be shot down.

Oi Jerko! Corrupting Userids to insult is just childish!

As I posted earlier, I suspect the wedges were cast, so not directly comparable with those forged (mainly) high-end offerings!

However, I agree about the resale value of Orkas. No snobbery there! If that's a major consideration, then Orkas, or probably even KZG, should not be considered! Even Coopers have a tiny market (outside Edinburgh!), so I'd be (mildly) interested to know what price they go for when you tire of them compared with their RRP EACH that is just about the OP's budget - for an entire set of irons!

On the subject of snobbery, I'm loving the £50 set of Miuras in my bag/sig - that cost £50!

My response was largely due to the fact that it p!ssed me off that you'd taken the time to go through this thread and shoot down my comment. Seems like a common theme across a number of your posts on threads to be honest.

Maybe I should have just done what a number of others have done on here and suggested some irons that were way out of the £200 price range.

As previously written this thread is about a cheap set of irons, not about naming a number of brands people haven't even heard of to make you sound like billy big b*llocks.

Oh and to compare the JPX game improver iron to the RS range, not really apples and apples is it.
