been playing now for a couple of months, today i went to have my clubs checked and fitted, was advised that my clubs are not very good and would benefit from some more modern steel shafted clubs, currently have powerbilt clubs with carbon shafts, not sure of age.

was looking at a full set of john letters T8 irons with 2 hybrids which also inclided the sand wedge they were £199

just wondering if theres any better sets for the same sorta money?

Your best bet would be to look around for a good quality 2nd hand set, you'll easily pick up something good for that amount of money

Not sure if these are what you are after, however you could pick up Cobra s3 forged recently for about 200 quid and i have seen Cleveland 588 forged for maybe £180

There's a set of Rocketbladez for sale in the "for sale" section. Decent enough set but it doesn't state what flex the shafts are.
Mate of mine plays with these clubs and he is more than happy with them.

Aye, 2nd hand is the way to go and you'll get some good gear for £200.

If you must buy new, don't overlook the Benross or Wilson Staff range... you could probably pick up D100s for less than £200 now. AG have CG7s for under £200 just now which are lovely irons imo.

As always I'd recommend the Ping G series as they are all well engineered and built with a lot of forgiveness in them. So no matter which ones you get you can guarantee you are getting quality clubs that will help your game if you have just started playing. I'd avoid any forged pro iron as some have recommended as they are not for beginners really

I take it the John letters ones are not that great then? What about the hybrid clubs? The John letters set comes with 2 hybrids

Yes I would try and get hybrids to replace at least a 3 and 4 iron. I think John letters have a bit of a reputation as the bargain offering from Direct Golf. In the cheaper range manufactures like Benross and MD Golf seem to have a better reputation. For some reason John letters doesn't seem to ever get much love.

But having said that the clubs seem to get a decent review here http://www.golfmagic.com/reviews/equipment/irons/john-letters-t8-hybrid-irons-3-sw-steel/16283.html http://www.todaysgolfer.co.uk/equip.../john-letters-t8-super-game-improvement-iron/ and they sound like the type of club a higher handicapper would benefit from.

That's the thing that make the John letters appealing decent reviews and get the 2 hybrids as part of the price

I've just bought a set of taylormade CB TP IRONS for £200. Currently play benross hotspeed 2 irons, great clubs and if ibget on with these TMs then the benross clubs will be up for sale in the near future.

Imo, you would be paying too much for an Ok, but only Ok, set that might well not be appropriate for you!

I believe now is a good time to get fitted sufficiently to ensure that your next clubs are 'right' for you! By that, I mean the right length (which also affects the angle of the head - lie angle) and the right shaft flex for your swing speed. As someone about to commit to the game, it's likely that your actual swing will change - with lessons or simply with practice/experience, but neither your swing speed nor your own physical attributes are likely to change significantly. Getting it right now will make progress to 'better' levels so much easier! This 'static' fitting includes measuring height, wrist-to-floor distance and hand size should suffice for now, and maybe for a long time!

I'd suggest you find a Ping supplier and get fitted - for their G30s, their latest model 'game-improvement' (GI) irons! Then look on Ebay fo some G20s or G15s (their 2 and 3 generation ago GI model resp.) that are the same (Dot and Flex) and in your price range. I'd have no qualms about recommending this semi-abuse of their fitting process as it seems that once someone is a happy Ping user, they stay a Ping user!! If you have to pay for the fitting (you shouldn't) then up to £20 wouldn't be too bad compensation if done at a Pro Shop! This 'static' fitting (which includes height, wrist-to-floor distance and hand size) should suffice for now!

If you don't want to go that way, then definitely 2nd hand is better value than new - and it's even worth simply 'parking' the funds until January as it's likely that you will get a better deal then anyway! But MD or Benross are the 'specialists' in value for money GI irons. John Letters are/were Direct Golf's own brand equivalent but don't generally seem to produce the same cost/vfm!

And there's also the clubs I used to recommend without hesitation-Mizuno MX25 or MX23 (the earlier model). Many buy these at about your level and never need to consider buying irons again! They are forged, so may show some wear or 'bag chatter' tiny dents. MX19, or MX15s are earlier equivalent models that are cast, so likelier to be slightly less 'worn'! I believe the MX25s are in your price range, but as per my comment about Ping, the incremental improvement is small, so you might find a 'better buy' in the other models.

If you are hesitant about using Ebay for this, you could consider Golfbidder. They guarantee that their clubs are genuine and have a 'return if not satisfied' (for the price of postage) service! You do pay a bit more though - but possibly worthwhile in these circumstances.

I hope that helps.

We went for a fitting yesterday and all we really achieved was that we need new clubs and that based on our high (5ft7 and 5ft8) any standard club would be fine.... This was at direct golf
